1983 gl1100 rear fender FOR naked 86 gl1200

#1

Post by JayPoorJay »

Good Morning Good People.

It's me again... Yup, all kinds of questions and I am SURE this isn't the last of them. Especially once the more mechanical and electrical stuff starts happening.

On the scale of 1 - 10 again. What will it take to place a 80-83 gl1100 rear fender on a 86 gl1200...?

By the way, yesterday I took the two gl1200 side covers (the LH needing real rehab) and the false tank from the gl1100. Thanks for the help.

This is the part, the first part, I'm looking at. I'm struggling with dropping in link's on my phone 😖

Some one correct me if I am wrong please but I think the 1200 rear tire is a 15 inch and the 1100 is a 17??? so the aspect between the tire and the fender would not be even close. Also I think the 1200 frame is wider so mounting would be a challenge.

Ok. I hear ya, but on the rear tire, is it 17 for the gl1200 and 15 for the gl1100? Does the gl1100 actually have a bigger wheel? I'm a complete newbie,,, don't mean to be a wise ass, just want to be sure.

Is there (and what I do in these first steps and stages will not be the final) a fender that WILL fit without a lot of pain and suffering? In my looking around online I saw fenders from Honda like below, unpainted or in various states, and really I am just looking for something to begin that I can work with for a while.

The 82-83 year 1100’s had a 16” rear wheel. 80-81 were 17”.

You could put on a 1500 final drive (not a bolt on, but easy) and have a wider 3.5”, 16” rim.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Interesting. And to state as clearly as I can, before you suggested that I didn't even know that was a THING. Not in any way shape or form.

But ok. I wouldn't mind a larger rear tire. I would be very interested in hearing more about the pluses and minuses of a larger rear wheel. What does it add or take away from performance, and the like. Also, is this just for a fender? Is this the best way to go simply for the fender OR is there a fender that works for the 1200?

I have one of those plastic hidden fenders for the 1200 and, is that enough for a fender? I like the looks of your bike Eric (from what I can make out in the profile pic) and bikes that MOSTLY have the rear wheel exposed.

At the same time, don't expect to ride much or at all in the rain, but don't want mud, pebbles and water spray all up and over my back and head, lol

I have a lot of work to do and, I'll admit, am unafraid but have a LOT to learn.

I just looked online (fleabay) and am BLOWN AWAY by the costs of things. So so inexpensive and available! With the car work I'm used to such a NICE thing.

Is this and are these what you mean?
And in a basic way, what's involved.

Here's my machine. Only 10,000 miles on it.

I lucked out and found a trike leftover. $75 and I had everything attached from swingarm back. There’s a good write up at Saunders for swapping the final drive and wheel and brake components. I’ll see if I can find it and link it. If you have to buy all the pieces, it could get expensive. You need your 1200 swing arm and drive shaft. You drill the mounting holes a bit bigger and it bolts up. There are year specific differences. I believe 88-89 had the same bolt pattern for the rim as the 1200, but can’t recall for sure.

Details are as good as I’m aware of. First few links are dead, but keep reading and there pics and details I haven’t included above.

Your tire height can be determined by what aspect ratio (?) you have. A 60 series is a lot shorter than a 90 series. I believe you could run a 160/anything/16 and match the 1200 diameter.

That bike of mine I miss dearly, but she was a tramp and took off and left me.

It isn't the wheel size that matters but the outer diameter of the tire mounted on it.
I don't have the numbers for the wheels mentioned in this thread handy but as an example the standard CX500 came with a 3.75-18 rear tire and some later CX500 models (+ the GL500 with similar engine & drivetrain) came with a 130/90-16 rear tire and the outer diameters of the tires are so close as to make no difference.
Of course, the change to the 16" tire was driven by style and they are known to take more effort to lean into turns (as is usual with fatter tires)...

So Bob, Eric,,,

I will check what I have for tires and post back. At this poinT (of this is what y'all are taking about with tires and such) I think the idea of going to the 1500 rear end is a ways off,,,

at the same time,,, and sorry, as I've said, I'm a NewBie, newbie and I'm trying to keep up,,,, are you guys talking about the FENDER and, if my tire may match, OR if the original bike, the 1100 may have been the year with the smaller tire - a fender from a 82 my fit, or be close?

I'm sorry, lol. I remember when 8 first dive into the 928 forum a while back - and the ways the guys talked went RIGHT over my head. Hahaha, take it easy on a Brotha 🤣

It is just the ratio of the tire to the fender. A 2 inch difference would not allow the lines of the tire and the lines of the fender match so it would look like crud in my opinion. If you have both parts just have someone hold it up there and step back and take a look. I have a Harley fender on my 75 just cause I wanted something that was different on a Wing. Lots of people hate but it is my bike and I like it.

Here is an old pic of it mounted on a 78 I had, you can see how the tire circumference matches the fender

When you do that make sure you allow for suspension travel.
