7v regulator question

#1

Post by 6adan »

I am working on a 75 that i thought was getting hot because the temp gauge would start showing hot very fast. The fan would never come on, so I thought that was the problem but using a heat gun shows it is not really getting hot. My understanding is the gauge works off the 7v reg. Am I correct on this? If I am then all I would need to do is replace the reg. Thanks Dannie

Fuel level gauge works off of the same 7 volts.

It depends on whether the 7V regulator is the cause of the high reading. Locate the 7V reg and measure its output voltage. If it is 7 volts the regulator isn't the problem. If it is higher check the 7V reg's ground connection (a poor connection can cause a high reading).
If the 7V reg has failed murrayscarbs.com has inexpensive replacements.

Thanks guys, I replaced the regulator after it tested bad but that didn't do any good. I know it is not really getting hot because I can put my hand on the radiator when the gauge is showing in the red. It will show hot in less than a minute from a cold start. Any more ideas will be helpful.

Have you measured the output voltage of the new 7V regulator? If there is a bad connection between where it plugs into the harness and ground that can increase the voltage between the output and a good ground.

If you do indeed have 7V feeding the gauge circuit the next thing to check is whether the sender is working correctly (instructions for that are in the FSM).
