Clutch problem in 79 GL1000?
as the title suggests my 79 wing with approx. 49,000 miles has a habit of making a muffled screech once in a while when starting out. The bike doesn't stall when this happens it just sort of lurches forward like the clutch was popped. The clutch works good otherwise, no slipping and disengages smoothly with no dragging, I've had the bike for about 9 years and have changed the oil every 2,500 miles with Shell Rotella. The bike is stock except for a home brewed intake with a 1970's hitachie carb from a Subaru. Any idea what might cause this?

Does it do it more often when it's cold?
My bet's on clutch plates. Probably slipping a bit before grabbing (hence the lurch). Mine was doing something similar, and new plates cleared it right up.

I would adjust the clutch properly and go from there.

Spline Negligence ?
https://ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=77253
Couldn't locate a photo though of the environmentally more vulnerable final driving output splines, that need to be serviced during every rear tire replacement session,
But, this ShopTalk maintenance tutorial should be helpful:

The propellor shaft's u-joint located under the flexible rubber boot can be a point of failure, too. Check there, first?
(my Trike doesn't have that Final Drive, Output splines configuration. Final Drive, Input splines components. Yes. )
