Re: 77 Starter Motor
I am pretty sure you can use a GL1100 in a GL1000. It is slightly shorter. Be sure to carefully take it apart and clean it up inside. Do not buy a cheap starter on eBay. People have good luck with Rick's Starter if you want a new one. Read some tips in other threads about how to carefully disassemble/reassemble the unit or you will might break it. For example, use a very thin backup wrench on the lower nut when removing/tightening the cable connection. After reassembly, make sure you can turn the gear with your hand or you may have the internal gears in the wrong spot. Use moly paste/grease on the internal gears.

The cheap ones on eBay will break quickly, so do not buy one. They make the gears out of junk.

Re: 77 Starter Motor
When the starter motor on the '79 engine I used to have in my '83 died before I had the 1100 engine ready to install I put the 1100's starter motor on the 1000 and it fit and worked just fine.
I think the starter motor that was on it before was from a '77 (not 100% sure but I did have the '77 one on it at one time) so an 1100 starter motor should fit your '77.

1100 starter will fit the 1000; the 1000 starter will not fit the 1100
