Custom/extended tool tray
Hey all,
Since I've the Weber's on now, there's a LOT more space under the shelter cover and I was hoping to extend the tool tray down 4-5 more inches. Has anyone ever modified their tray? I can't seem to come to a consensus as to what the material is, so proper adhesion might be an issue. I've thought about making one out of some sheet metal, but I'm not sure yet.
Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated, thanks!!

Re: Custom/extended tool tray
I would start with a tool tray and rivet sheet metal or sheet plastic to the sides, then remove the bottom once you are happy with your new bottom.

I'm going to guess it's abs plastic?
I'm with cyborg but I'd go one step further. Get some rigid styrofoam, clue enough pieces together to get the depth you want, whittle it down until it fits the opening with maybe a 1/4 gap and use that as a mold for a fiberglass one

I don't wanna mess with fiberglass, hahahaha!
Metal is a lot easier. I was considering the "extension" idea, just have to see if I can make it strong enough...

o ya. Just use the tray for the basic shape. I would form the final shape, and depth, with cardboard.Glass the intre thing, and strip the mold, leaving one piece that can be painted. Fiberglass is cheap and easy t work. I do some things out of metal, but in this case I would use fiberglass5speed wrote: ↑Thu Mar 09, 2023 6:09 pm I'm going to guess it's abs plastic?

It is hard to say for sure what type of plastic it is, but I believe it is HDPE or something similar. They make gas containers from this type of plastic. I am pretty sure it is not ABS. I vote for fiberglass, but if you had a large 3D printer, you could print one.

To test for ABS, put a drop of acetone on it and see if it softens a little. If so, probably ABS and you can glue it with ABS plumbing cement (afraid I have to get it on Amazon, now) using Oatey GP cleaner. ABS pieces come from wrecked motorcycles (see local dealer service department for a box of free ones).

Re: Custom/extended tool tray
Printer is an ender 3, so just shy of 10" Z. A good idea for sure, just need a design for one. I do have a friend w/ a 3d scanner though.... and i have a few friends in an RP lab that might be able to do something. certainly a good idea!cfairweather wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 8:56 am It is hard to say for sure what type of plastic it is, but I believe it is HDPE or something similar.
