Choke not holding

#1

Post by maury »

GL1000
Cold start, choke lever is pulled all the way out. Engine starts with 3,500 - 4000 RPM's but within a short period of time (minute or less) the RPM's begin to decrease and I have to continually pull the choke for several minutes until warmed up and idle holds without choke. If I do not touch the choke at all, the RPM's decrease until the engine dies.
Suggestions??

I think there is a way to tighten the cable with an adjustment where the cable passes through the mounting plate just below the knob. Mine has always been fine but your may be too loose. I do have to pull hard to engage mine.

If it's like the 1100 it has fingers that put tension on the cable by way of the adjusting nut. those fingers break.
my 1100 had the same issue.

On the 1000, it is finger tightened, at the base of the pull. It is not hexagonal so it doesn’t look like it could be tightened, but it is threaded on the inside. It’s a two handed operation. I wonder if the intention was to allow the user to set it at a desired rpm? 3500-400 at startup bothers me. I dial it down and snug it at 2500 to 3k and then drop it gradually until it’s happy.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

As said, it can be tightened a bit, but don't be surprised if it doesn't do much. The choke spring is rather stout, and even cranked down all the way with all the fingers intact the plunger has a habit of slowly pulling back in anyway.

I usually pull it most of the way out to get it started, adjust the revs down once it starts, then set it about 1/4 of the way out to let it warm up (revs sitting at about 2k-3k). That's closed enough for the housing to keep the lever out, but it's never something I really rely on.

When the choke cable on my GL500 would no longer hold or adjust I carried a short piece of split loom to keep the knob out for a while.
