No power in 5th

#1

Post by sickradsean »

I’ve noticed recently that there is limited difference in power between 4th and 5th gear. I’ll be at 70mph/4300 in 4th and then 75mph/4000 in 5th and that’s basically the top end. I can creep up to 80 but everything feels really boggy (when the rest of the time the throttle feels smooth).

Belts have recently been changed. I used the 3D printed blocks to make sure the cams didn’t wander. If the center wheel moved a tooth would that do something?

Carbs are clean and synched, running stock jets) Mixture is adjusted to get good reading on plugs. (Number 4 reads a little oily but if figure that’s just some seepage. Compression is a little low on this cylinder @117)

New coils, wires, and dyna ignition. Timing and valve clearance both checked. I put new mufflers on last year (stock Harley w/baffles) because the OG one was ratted out, but that should have limited effect on performance.

Thoughts?

I would suggest checking the advance mechanism behind the points plate. There is a way check that it is advancing in the manual. The mechanism sometimes gets corroded and doesn’t move.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

That would be my first thought also. Also a good idea to double check the timing marks.

Has this basically been a problem since you changed the belts ? The reason I ask is because we just had a thread that was basically the same that ended up with one cam a tooth off. If it were me, I would go back and check the cam timing. The “t1” flywheel mark centered on the marks in the timing hole, which will put the crank pulley in the correct position. The “cam” pulleys should both have the “up” mark at the top and the pulley side arrow witness marks should be lined up with the arrow witness marks on the back. I’d bet one is off a tooth and hoping it’s only 1 tooth.

Octane did an excellent writeup on doing this with pictures in the “Shoptalk” thread, check it out.

Well, if the center "wheel" moved, it would be a big difference. Check that brakes aren't dragging. And don't ride so fast!

If I have an electronic ignition and no longer have points would this still apply?

My Dyna S uses the mechanical timing advance with a magnetic trigger piece in place of the points cam.

Noted. I’ll have some time this weekend to check the timing advance, timing, and cam belts. Hopefully the belts are fine, taking off the radiator was a PITA last time.

I was able to sneak the belt covers off with the radiator in place. The marks on both belts seem to line up with the engine on T1.

I took off the ignition unit to inspect the mechanical advance. Seemed a bit crusty so I sprayed the bajesus out of it with electrical cleaner and gave it a good scrub.

Gonna head out for a few miles and I’ll report back!

Let us know, the advance may have been hanging up so your update may work well. Time will tell.

I'm gonna give ericheath the gold star on this one! Went out for a 25 mile ride and everything ran smooth like a vacuum cleaner. Only once or twice did I feel a little bit of a "chug" on acceleration (maybe some residual crap in the advance). But acceleration in 5th was no problem. Even blipped the throttle up to 90mph before I remembered i have a wife and kids haha.

Whats your thoughts on where to shift? I used to have an old CB750 that like being in the higher revs, but the GL seems to have the power band be between 4k-6k and mine REALLY likes to live above 3k in general.

I almost never look at the tach. Just shift when it feels ready to be shifted.
