Setting for Idle Mixture Screws?

#1

Post by randakk »

Recently, someone who was chasing a poor idling (and running) ’75 GL1000 asked me about the best setting for idle mixture (FUEL) screws.

My answer: Set them at the recommended setting advised by Honda and forget them! In the case of a ’75 (carb code #755A), this is 1 3/8 turns out.

(Note: “1 full turn” is 360 degrees, not 180 degrees.)

If everything is clean, correct and well synchronized, these bikes idle very well at the recommended idle mixture setting. Messing with them further is a low reward activity. Be sure to do the “off idle” fix recommended for “early” GL1000s for better off-idle throttle response.

If you find yourself chasing the idle mixture screw settings, stop and start over. Something else is surely amiss. Other experts may disagree with me, but that’s their prerogative. After all, I’m just an “Overrated Iconoclast in the Industry” according one maven. :)

Remember: when these bikes were assembled and popped out of the manufacturing facility in Japan, there was no “tuning” of these idle mixture screws. Likewise, the dealers who finished the assembly and setup of these bikes when new didn’t usually mess with the idle mixture settings either. Why? because they didn’t need to!

Who is this stranger talking about carbs like he may know something lolol lolol lolol lolol lolol lolol

Personally I think once they are out enough for the jug to fire at idle their impact is minimal. I like the idle drop just as a check to make sure that particular jug is firing and pulling a portion of the load. I find it very useful as a "quick and easy" troubleshooting tool. 90% of mine are set at idle drop plus 1 full turn. I think on most that is less than 2 turns and probably closer to 1.5

PS for anyone like me from google "Iconoclast: a person who attacks cherished beliefs or institutions"

and a whole garage full of possibilities!!

Psst. oh and by the way CHANGE YOUR BELTS!!!!

After setting to factory (or a 1/4 out :8) )you really shouldn't have to mess with them much unless something is wrong. I had one cylinder that the plugs told me was running rich so I had to lean her out by about a 1/2 turn. But that's about it.
