Check the regulator connection to ground. If the regulator shunts excess power to ground, and the ground is faulty...

Trickle only overnight once per month. You can do as much harm leaving it on trickle for extended periods as by not looking after it.
Battery tender & similar devices charge just enough to counter self discharge (not the same as a trickle charger).

that's what I do..plus my charger shuts off when the battery shows full charge.

From what I've heard over the years neglecting to top up the cells as needed and improper or neglected off season maintenance are the 2 main killers of powersports batteries.
