CBX 1000 carb jets

#1

Post by Jonesz »

Just wondering if anyone here knows what jets are in the 1979 CBX VB keihin carbs. The ones that are of concern are located under a rubber plug almost in the center of the carb body. In doing a compare to whiskerfishes GL carb diagrams I am thinking they are the slow fuel jets? the jets in ? appear to be pressed in and non-removable so thinking they must be cleaned using the old guitar string trick?
Any advice helpful as the carbs are getting a cleaning, lot of work to pull them (engine has to be tilted ahead) etc.so want to do a thorough job 1st time around.
Thanks Jonesz

If like the GL1100 nonremovable/pressed in jets they "can" be removed. That is the only way to really get them clean.

Thanks Robin we are going to try some small long threaded screws to catch the top of the jets and pull them with a small nut threaded just above the jet insertion point. Going to run a small matching tap in before the fine threaded bolt. Anyone have a better idea? I seem to recall using a sheetrock screw to grab the ones on my gl1000 but my mind does wander these days.

Mike Nixon’s preferred method for extracting the slow jets in the CBX is to drill and tap for an 8-40. I have used that method with great success on CBX carburetors. You only need about four or five threads. Then a long 8–40 bolt with a couple of nuts to pull out the jet. They pop right out very easily. I don’t recall the stock jets off the top of my head, my CBX had pods and RC engineering pipe. Was not running stock numbers.

I would not recommend the sheet rock screw. The upper part of the jet orifice may not be the actual jet size and folks consider less important, but I would certainly be concerned about serious irregularities in the metal and effect on airflow. 8–40 does less damage to flow characteristics I would imagine.

Thanx for that info Desertrefugee. Very helpful re size of bolt and I agree on the use of sheetrock screw being a little too aggressive

By the way, see the damage on one of the airflow pipes on the carburetors above? Courtesy of the one and only previous owner. I swear on a stack of Bibles but I did not do that. However, it is very easy to do when removing these rascals. If they’ve been on there for a long time, they will be a bear to get out. Take great care when prying them to use only the brackets for leverage. I placed a slim piece of wood between the fins of the head and the bracket and pried carefully. Heat the rubbers up until they stink, that is the secret.

Yep that is how they came out (the rubbers were hard as rocks) and we used wood again the fins to pry on but will remember to use heat when they go back in. My buddy used 4-40 machine screws and says they came out very easily.

Oooops. My bad. I said 8-40 above. Of course I meant 4-40. I blame it on the chemo.

And while pricey, if your rubbers are that hard, it would be wise to replace them while you're at it. You'll be glad you did - and quite possibly sad if you don't...
