another "custom" exhaust option..

#1

Post by 5speed »

I've been saving these in hopes I could make them work. I have a brand new muffler on my bike but man..those things are ugly...
These came off my wife's 83 Shadow 500. I have no idea how they will sound but I love the look.
Even better is..all I had to do was enlarge the mounting hole so the foot peg bolt would fit.
Only issue I saw was the rubber pad for the kickstand will need to be moved.

I'm using Bonnevill mufflers on my '75 and here's what I cobbled together for the center stand stop.

A small Mig, a small angle grinder with some cutoff wheels and some grinding wheels and you can do a lot! Mine is only a Handler 140 and it will do everything I need on bikes except aluminum.

I'm going to invest in a wire feed welder one of these days. My neighbour has one and has bailed me out a few times.
I have a decent collection of mechanical tools and never pass up a chance to buy more.
when I started our kitchen renovations I managed to sneak a 1/2" drive pneumatic impact gun in the house.

I mentioned to my siblings that I would like a 3L ultrasonic cleaner for my birthday in September. My older sister has taken this and I believe it is going to be (gave her the info and where to get it from). Will be mentioning I need it in May. Maybe a small mig welder next year. Should have thought about using them to populate the more exotic tools for me before this.

Cheers

The Handler 140 mig welder is available at Princess Auto - approximately $900.00 CDN.

 I wouldn't use it enough to justify that kind of money..

Unfortunately a good mig welder isn't cheap. I got a used Miller for $500 but still had to buy a gas tank and build the cart. For years I used a Miller buzz-box. They are inexpensive but are best used on thicker steel (tractor, tiger tanks etc.) The mig is really easy to learn to use and opens up a whole new vista. You can get an air cutoff tool and small die grinder from HF for $20 or so each. With that arsenal you can make all kinds of stuff.

I have a 4" and 5" angle grinder, 2 small die grinders, drill press...
However when it comes to welding parts on something I will be riding at 60+ mph..I feel much better having the welding job done by a certified welder. lol

I recognized those cans even before I read what they were
I've also got a Hobart 140...I bought it at cost about 15 years ago from an outfit I used to work at. At the time I think that was about $350... If I was going to buy one today, I wouldn't get a new one, I'd just surf Craigslist for a deal on a used one (like I do for everything else  ). It's one of those "once you have it, you wonder how you lived without it" kind of things...I don't just use it for fab work on bike/cars/trucks, but also for fixing misc. things around the house, and making metal pieces for log furniture I make.
If you've got an angle grinder and a drill, you're already half way there...that and the welder are pretty much all I use to build my machines. Well, that and copious amounts of sanding, grinding, and cutoff disks  . Welding is as much as art as it is a science...you can learn pretty much everything you need to know from Youtube, but experience is where the magic is at.

I have the $200 Harbor Freight TIG welder. Slower to use than a MIG, but produces good results as long as metal is clean. Add to that whatever it costs for a tank and regulator. I think I picked up my tank for $70. Getting it filled in Winnipeg is about $80 so I try and get mine across the border for $30+.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.
