I "can" get 38-40 mpg with mine, but it is a lot more fun to get only 30-32. :-D

Keeping it under 3K will greatly improve your mpg.

One thing to consider is from 2014 on the Valkyrie got the 1800 fuel injection like the goldwing and
All new bike really. Much better at slow speed I think. I just loved the bike. I believe it is a four year run
Then no more Valerie's from Honda for now. But anyway what I wanted to say is they are priced low in relation to used 1800 goldwings. I've seen low mile 2014 valkyries around ten grand. But still to much for me. So I got a st1300 which doesn't have the cool motor and is very tall, but still rated as one of the best
Sport touring bikes made. M first choice would be a used new generation Valkyrie if I had the dough.
Getting away from carbs is really nice so far.

Almost bought a new 2014 Valkyrie last year for $10 K CDN (cheap). They seem to want to give them away. Don't like that much plastic and underexposed engine.

I ride two Valks, and they are fun, dependable, and a Kick in da' pants to ride. One is a slightly custom show bike, and one is box stock from factory. They both serve their purpose. My custom is the "show my hiney" bike, with loud pipes, hopped up, and luvs to set off Mustang alarms in Motel parking lots. The stock bike is kept in the North Georgia Mountains, and is comfy to tootle round the Smokies. Not as smooth as Wings, but will serve the touring experience well. Leaving for Inzane-the Valk National Rally in Billings, MT last week of June. Try one, you will like it, and as I said...they are a "KIck in da' pants" to ride!!!

I built my 1999 Valkyrie from parts sourced from the internet. Took me 9 months and $4000. After riding a '81 Gold wing "naked", the Valkyrie is a much heavier bike. And yes, it is a lot to handle at slow speeds (gas stops, slow turns, gravel), but talk about power! And s m o o t h!
You CAN actually put a nickle (.05) on its edge on the valve cover, rev the engine, and it will stand up without falling over. Done it. It eats up the miles but only gets about 35-40 mpg.
Mine has the Standard tank. (5 gal.) Taxi tire on the rear, rear tire on the front. Double "Dark side". Rifle fairing. Modulating headlight. Throw-over bags. Love the bike. No it is not for sale.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.
Do your work with your whole heart and you will succeed! There is so little competition.
Come to kindly terms with your ass, for IT bears YOU!

Great motorcycle - the power is awesome.

I always joked that it's not "The Best" at anything, but it's really good at everything!
I miss it a lot, but as others have noted it's a heavy bike to maneuver at slow speeds.

Ive run my Tourer since 1997. Good bikes. Almost bulletproof. Run strong low maintenance. Stabil in gas in the winter and change brake fluid and clutch fluid a bit more than they call for. No great gas milage with that huge shield in front but it's livable. I've found the petcock not a problem..It does have a whirring sound to it at 55 mph. Belts most likely. Keep the proper lube in the rear splines and you're good to go. Tires don't get great milage and are expensive. Shove it into a corner and it will handle great. Low seat height makes parking lots easy. The engine runs smooth at highway speeds. It does get buzzy at 95 but who stays there long? I don't. Good electrics and charging is great.

There's been days where I've thought about selling the GL1000 and GL1200S and using the cash to buy a 1st gen Valk. I still may, one day. But the 1200 can do everything the Valk could, and I'd like to keep at least something vintage.

But still..... They look DANG good.
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

I have a 98 Tourer bought about 10 years ago with 24,000 miles on it then. Made a trip west putting 4,300 mies on that trip. Averaged 30mpg. I love the bike at highway speeds but low speeds and on dirt or gravel lots or roads is a struggle. I've set steering head torque several times, replaced the head bearings, adjusted swing arm bearings, replaced tires, tried different tire pressures but nothing has helped with low speed stability.

Only other problems was the starter switch , I cleaned it and installed a headilght relay and rear wheel bearings( unrelated to the handling problem).

Yes, the fat lady is a bit more challenging to take off road than a cr250, but where there's a will............:
