2017 Iron Butt Rally

#1

Post by UltraRunner »

Hello all- sorry, I haven't been on the site much lately, so it is possible that this has already been discussed. I was perusing the start pictures for this year's Iron Butt Rally, and there is a Goldwing running it! Pretty impressive looking bike. Anyone know who it is? The pictures are copyrighted, so all I can include is the link. Hope it works. There are several pictures of the bike if you scroll through (29-34 of the 46 posted).

I've been catching up on my reading, and this was posted as an update by the IBR Scribe John Harrison on Saturday. It answers part of my question. Is Dylan a member here?

"Dylan Spink, listed as the youngest rider, seems to have had a birthday and also changed his chosen
mount from the originally listed ST1300 to a hopeless class 1977 GL1000 Goldwing. However, those
changes were not shown on the official spreadsheet provided to the scribe. Just sayin’. (Y’all should read
that last phrase with a LA accent for best effect (LA means Lower Alabama)). There was another
unreported bike change, so Dan Crowley’s Cagiva adds one more Italian marquee.

Speaking of that ‘77 vintage Wing, it proved to be of some interest for the tech team today. Dylan Spink
may be the youngest rider in the rally, but his fabrication and farkling skills appear to be rather
advanced. There are some impressive details on this bike that are worth a look. As impressed as the
jaded and grizzled tech team might be, they still have a job to do. The inspection resulted in the
dimension calculated fuel volume being extremely close to the limit of 11.5 gallons, including fuel lines
and filters. Because Tom Austin’s precise fuel testing equipment was unavailable to the tech staff, the
cell was provisionally approved with the requirement that the rider turn in all fuel receipts during the
rally.Rob Nye’s BMW is also pushing the max on board fuel volume, coming in just under the limit at
11.47 gallons."

Very nice Wing! I've not seen it on the site before, so unless he's holding out on us, Dylan isn't a member.
I've been enamored with the idea of doing an Iron Butt for a number of years, then I see all these bikes with extra fuel cells, three types of navigation devices, and probably even a porta-potty or two, and I wonder, is that all necessary? Makes it look like a very daunting undertaking.

Never seen that bike before. Used to be a member here a long time ago that was a serious distance runner. rototiller Donald or something like that. He was real big into antique rototillers. Had a bad wreck but i thought I had read or heard he was riding again. He was at the first couple of Randakk rallys.
Here is a pic of his bike from before the crash. His Aux fuel cell was on that table back there and it would pivot back and I think he had some extra storage back there.

11,000 miles in 11 days takes more than an iron butt.

Yeah, you and I did some of those on the Big Trip in 2013, in some REAL heat too.
