over heating trying to sync carbs

#1

Post by 5speed »

After 2 years of buying parts and putting them on... :8)
I still need to sync the carbs. Heading out shortly to do that.
My gas gauge only goes up to half a tank.
The aluminum radiator might be working to good. I put 8 miles on it both out and in town and the heat gauge barely came off the blue line.
The idle is acting strange. When I pull in the clutch it will rev up to around 2 grand..then idle back down.
I'll be back to bug you folks if it still does it after the carb sync.
I'm putting it in a vintage bike show and shine tomorrow..and leaving the bard dirt on it. lol
Ya..I'm pumped.. dancr

and first question...
the gauges won't stop fluctuating like this at idle. they came with valves for each line. the instructions made no mention of installing them in the line.
I'm guessing they are to stop the gauges from doing this?

there should be little valves in each line. Aquarium air valves. You screw those down to reduce the vibration of the vacuum.

One easy overlook to cause your random 2000 rpm is forgetting to tighten down the rubber boots on the intake elbows.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I checked the rubber boots, studs for the intakes. All tight.
I was sort of making some headway and she boiled over on me. I was watching the heat gauge and it was not even up to the wide white line and it puked out the over flow.
I'm thinking it may have air locked.
So..it's in the garage spending some time alone thinking about what it did and I'm in the house having a coffee.
I put the valves in the lines and that solved the fluttering problem but they are still acting strange.
They are in the red section on the left of the gauge.
I managed to get the gauge for the #4 and #3 gauges down into the black below that red section and the #1 and #2 in the lower part of the red. but then the idle goes all wacky.
If I shut the bike off..they go up about 11 o:clock and stay there if I start it..but then the idle does it's thing and they drop down.
I vacuum tested the air and fuel side of the carbs and the fuel lines as per Randakk's video and had no leaks. What am I missing?

Also..I haven't touched the idle mixture screws. I set them all at 2 turns out and left them.

Maybe I am missing something here but it is not so much what the reading is as that they are all the same. Be careful not to close the little valves too far or they react too slowly and mess with your head as you make small adjustments. Right side( 1-3 ) equal---left side equal ( 2-4 ) and then left to right equal. After each side reset the speed close to 1000. Sometimes you need to over and over to get there. All with in an inch hi to lo and less than an inch if possible. My 84 is closer to 3 turns plus on the mixture screws

that is what I was shooting for but I can't get them even a bit close to equal.
Here is my second attempt..and it's still running hot, even with a fan blowing on the rad.
the chain is making an awful racket too.

Ignore the markings on the gauges just get them even. I use a box fan in front of mine when doing this. Being that severely out of whack is a big contributor to how hot she is running.

Well attempt #3. I was trying to figure out why it was getting hot. I discovered the fan blade was binding on something.
So I pulled the rad, removed the fan and took the blade off. It was rubbing on the fan motor case. I may have lost a spacer or washer that goes between the blade and motor case.
I put enough thin washers under it so it spun free. Tested it before I put it back on the rad, after I put the rad in, hooked everything up, replaced the coolant, fired it up and with in 15 minutes it was boiling the coolant again.
The heat gauge never got halfway up and the fan didn't come on.
This makes no sense to me as I let it idle in the driveway a few days ago for half an hour and it didn't over heat. :(
It didn't over heat this morning when I took it for a ride. It started after I started trying to sync the carbs.
My pipes are all turning blue too..

If it is idling unusually hi it can add to the heating issue. To raise the vacuum gage reading you will be closing the butterfly and to lower it will be opening more. . King of backward thinking. I set mine up so that right two gages is right and left two is left

Almost sounds like you blew a head gasket. Hope not. At this point i would remove the carbs and start from zero with a bench synch.

You might be able to 'bench sync' the carbs by just removing the intake runners one side at a time without removing the carbs. But yes, I think you need to start from scratch, so you have a solid baseline. As for the headers blueing, that's pretty normal for single wall pipes. Doesn't take very long.

I was thinking that..and hoping not. there is no sweet smelling steam coming from the exhaust..and when I drained the anti freeze to remove the rad there was no oil in it.
