Post by SovietMike »

So I bought a bike without a title but it had a bill of sale it was a honda twinstar 185 for dirt cheap and I filled out the VT registration form and mailed a check to them then 15 days later I get a plate in the mail and a copy of my paperwork with their corrections on it but no sticker for the plate and no real registration card/form am I good to ride the bike or is there something else I have to do?

Only your DMV or a LEO could answer that correctly. I doubt though you can ride or drive anything with an out of state plate very long. I think once you get the VT stuff you then register it in the state you live in. And be warned, some states no longer accept that. They are figuring out what some people are doing.

Yep at least that's what I was told by my local DMV or license branch office as they're called here. Ive had issues with the title on 2 of my bikes, I had the titles but both were filled out incorrectly which essentially made them worthless and the clerk informed me that the Vermont loophole wasn't accepted by them anymore. Fortunately for me I was able to track down the last registered owners and got it straightened out.

Yea years ago I worked with "Broadway Title", "Titles are US" and a couple of other companies that would use Vermont and other states to get a title but it always fell through. I did always get my money back but it was frustrating to wait weeks and sometimes months just to find out it was not going to work. I think it was Broadway title that sent my check back with a note that said you are from Virginia and that sux's for you. Good luck!

Dunn ohow you got the plate unless all they wanted was your $$. Maybe that's why you didn't get a sticker/

But anyways, the Vermont DMV says "You must provide DMV with the following: a completed Registration Application form #TA-VD-119, the bill of sale, the title to the motorcycle, an updated (current) odometer statement and payment of the proper fees. If you did not purchase the motorcycle from a dealer (if you purchased it from a private individual) you will also need a "Visual Verification of Serial Number" completed.

I think Vermont only cares about the $$ as they charge $48 per year for the plate.

I'd be interested to see if the Wisconsin DMV actually issues a title or registration.

Does Wisconsin require a title?

Here in RI, you don't need one for something over 10 years old.

Yep, Wisconsin requires a title. They do have a couple of ways to 'get' one issued, but there are a few hoops to jump through.
