PS, some good things were said earlier about Valkyries--I have been trying for about six months to sell a really nice 97 at a bargain price.

Last summer I decided to get back into touring. It’s been almost 10yrs since I’ve travelled cross country. I was on an 1800 back then. Quite the bike, comfortable, dependable, handled well (once under way), and got decent gas mileage.
Fast forward; talked to my good friend Tom at the local dealer. Worked out a price and laid down a deposit on a DCT Tour model.

Goldwing arrived last Thursday. I took it home today!
Ended up using a Canyon Dancer to tie down the front end. Removed the covers from the rear tip over bars to fasten the rear. Turned out well.

While I understand that the GL1500 was the next evolutionary step from the GL1200 I was never really excited about it. It was a fine machine but just too bulky for my taste. But when the Valkyrie came out I was. I used to sit on the one at my local dealer and drool, knowing that it was both out of my price range and too long for my parking space (the 1100 barely fits).
The GL1800 left me flat too. Again a fine machine but if the 1500 was too bulky.... (not that I had the money or space anyway). When I saw the F6B I thought they were onto something, making what had been so huge look long & lean by comparison. Cool.
And then I saw the pics of the 2018 'Wing in a magazine, complete with a pic showing it next to the 2017 to show how much leaner it is. Its still to big for my taste but I think putting that whale of a machine on a diet is probably the biggest news in motorcycling this decade. If this starts a trend of putting even more useful features into a package that is more manageable for an average sized rider it has to be good for motorcycling.
Who knows, if this catches on they might even have the good sense to introduce a modern 4 cylinder version.....

Thought some might appreciate seeing what’s under the pretty paint. Most of the covers had to removed to install some accessories.
List of accessories

Purchased but not installed yet
- Trunk rack w/LED brake lights

Turned some of the shop lights off to take this photo. Honda calls then Entry lights, but most know them as puddle lights. They come on when you press the key fog On, and when you turn the bike off.
Upper deflectors mount under mirrors. They’re adjustable. Here it’s turned to keep air off the rider.
Lower deflectors are on back order.
We haven’t had the best weather so far, but was able to get about 200 miles on it.
First impressions.
Smooth, very smooth. The front suspension is awesome. Kinda cool watching the tie rods move.
Grip & seat heaters work great (had them set to #2 of 5 settings, 44deg outside).
Seat is more comfortable than it looks.
Fuel filler neck is very narrow, really got to be careful.
The DCT transmission takes some getting use to. In Tour mode with a light throttle, it’ll go from 1st to 3rd in a blink of an eye, and I was in 7th by 45mph. Found myself reaching for the clutch lever, and shift lever. Plenty of power. Turn it to Sport mode, and hang on. Throttle response and gear changes are night & day compared to the Tour mode.
You can switch on the fly between modes and go from auto to manual also. When approaching a stop (in auto); you can feel the tranny downshift from 3rd to 1st. Not nearly as smooth as the upshifts. Rumors have Honda coming up with a firmware change.
First tank of fuel yielded 43.4mpg.
Been scrubbing in the tires, so no report on how it handles on twisty roads.
Playing with the GPS, which isn’t as intuitive as my Garmin. More on this later.
