We moved Beth's 08 HD heritage softail and our 78 in the first transfer of stuff to Virginia. Knowing I would be doing the carbs on the 78

Yesterday we went for a ride on the HD... well, that is an over statement. Just pulling out the subdivision the check battery light comes in... back to the house to recheck all the connections and off again.... a mile away, same thing.

Long and short I check the stator and continuity is good, but only about 12 VAC when running *should be at least 20... looks like I get to replace a stator :evil:

Likely you are right on the stator but verify the battery is not the culprit by having a shorted cell requiring more of the stator than is available. Is the stator a common issue on those bikes?

Could be worse Rodger, it could be a Goldwing that needs a stator, the Harley stator isn't that hard to replace.

you are right, I do not need to pull the engine. unfortunately my lift is in the 'to be moved" stuff. at first I thought it was the battery, but it charges up fine

hard to tell if stators are an issue, but there are threads on the HD forum about this

Are you sure it should be at 20v when running? That seems high compared to the GL, where I think the manual says something like 15 - 16 volts, at certain revs.

First of all I find electrics confusing and in case you hadn't realised, I'm no expert! :IDTS:
The test I thought you meant is the DC across the battery which they say should read 13.2 -15 V dc when charging, if that fails then you check the ac readings at the stator, and you should indeed get a reading in the 20V ac, but as I said, don't really understand that without seeing it with manual in hand. Sorry for any confusion Roger.

it was only about 12.5 VDC when across the battery... and that was a battery at 13.6 when I started. did not go up when I revved the engine. yes it is confusing to remember the stator puts out AC which the regulator/rectifier converts to DC

of course my MC lift is still in OK and HD's do not have a center stand. So I have ordered a front wheel chock which I will attach to a piece of plywood for stability to hold the bike up right. To get the cover off I will need to take off the "jiffy stand" (yes, that is what HD calls the side stand. Thankfully youtube has videos of how to do the job.

You'll need some big sockets and some strong arms when you take off the compensator nut and don't forget the hunk of wood to jam into the primary chain to hold it while loosening the nut. Crude, but it works. Oh yeah.....don't forget "lefty loosey" isn't always true. ;)

yeah, on one of the videos they jammed a socket extender and eventually used a pipe wrench :shock:

does it turn counter clockwise? I have ordered a Clymer manual along with the stator.... no derby gasket though :lol:

The crank bolt is regular right hand thread, but the clutch nut is left hand thread and the torque spec is a hundred bazillion foot pounds.....you'll have to get Beth to help with that one. You have to take them both off because the chain and sprockets come of as an assembly. Not very technical work, but if you have arms like Popeye, it helps.

in the video they did not take off the clutch, they simply removed the adjuster and then the crank sprocket and chain out the way... I will re-look that up when I get home as I cannot access some things at work
