Lets talk pipe wrap

Post by UK_Andy »

I kinda like it but is it damaging to the engine by keeping more heat in than is necessary?

I don't believe in there being any gains unlike ceramic coating.

So, lets hear your thoughts and opinions please.

I've never used wrap but I did a lot of research because I wanted to wrap the headers on my camaro to reduce under hood heat.
The wrap retains water..and I didn't want my brand new headers rusting out. A lot of the info I read mentioned the pipes rusting out due to the wrap retaining water and road grime.
Maybe the articles I read were cases of people installing it wrong I don't know.
Of course this isn't a concern with stainless pipes.
I chose to go with ceramic coating and 10 years later they still look brand new and there was a noticeable drop in under hood temps.
You can buy spray cans of ceramic coating now although I have no experience with them in regards to quality and durability.
Here is a before and after of my headers. the person that coated them for me told me to run them for a summer to burn the finish off then bring them to him.

In race engines we wrap or ceramic coat to keep the heat in. It can create a bit of power by keeping the exhaust hot which helps pull it out of the pipe.
I don't believe in there being any gains unlike ceramic coating.

As far as rusting I think Sunnbobb had some on for awhiel. Removed it and the pipes were still in good shape. Might depend on if you ride in the rain. If you don't then they won't get wet.

or maybe the ones I saw where bikes left outside in the weather..they certainly wouldn't be wet very long if you were riding..
I love the look of it and if I had stainless pipes I would wrap them if they went with my build.

Wont rust pipes. I've been running it for several years, no issues, I keep my bike indoors. As for the engine, I've not had any heat issues either. As for performance, I don't notice any difference. I just like how it looks. LOL

As for wrap, the more expensive wrap is the best. It actually hardens once it's hot and wont unwrap or wear.
I found the end of the internet

I don't know about rusty pipes - but "in theory" pipe wrap gives the same performance benefits as ceramic coating. By insulating the pipe, the exhaust gasses retain a higher temperature, which in turn allows better flow through the system. Again, that's the theory. Does it work? Beats me. I heard there is a guy who has a carburetor that allows my '75 Bonneville to get 100 MPG too!

I thought that pipe wrap would keep heat in and ceramic coating would help it run cooler.

No, same principle. It does make a little more power. Only seen on a dyno or at the track though.
