New to me 750

#1

Post by wingrider »

Hello All,
Well, I have another project to wait in the wings..a few years back, I had inquired here about this bike. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=57999. Now, back then, I couldn’t get around it, but could see it was in fairly decent shape. Reading back, it was thought to have 18,xxx on it, and was last run in 08. I knew that it had been down once, but the fairing, tip over bars, and center stand took most of the brunt. The exhaust rubbed a little.

This is a (I believe) one owner 77 CB 750K. The friend at work recently said his folks were moving, and did I still want the bike. We had originally said $400, but somehow that turned into $500 as the day drew near to pick it up. Yesterday went over and saw around the bike for the first time. I got it out to my property to shoot a couple pictures of it. Turns out it has 22,xxx miles, was last tagged in 2010, and is missing the right side cover. The headlight looked funny to me until I remembered that this once had a fairing on it, and they popped that one on there.

It needs a once over, the front brake doesn’t work, and I am sure the carbs are gummed up. I didn’t pop the tank open to see what was going on in there, but there is fuel in it. The engine does turn over by the kick starter, so we aren’t stuck.

I will hopefully find the side cover somewhere, and will pop a small dent out of the tank that is near the seat with a suction cup. I do have a headlight assembly from a 77 550 that is hopefully the same as the 750, one less thing needed to purchase. The rear rack is broken, so it will be an easy reason to take it off. The original grab bar is still there though! The pipe does have a blemish, but I don’t think I am going to worry to much about it. Not sure if I can dress it up anymore, but not a huge bother if not.

So, now I get to learn about the 750’s. I think this one will clean up good, and will get in tip top shape mechanically. anim-cheers1

Nice. I had one exactly like that “back in the day”.

Ooooooo, looks nice. I'm hitting the final stretch restoring a 750 of my own (a '72. The thread should be kicking around here somewhere), and it's been.... fun. Definitely a different animal from a Goldwing, but not in a bad way. Definitely more of the "simpler, but rougher" inline engine bike vibe going on, but neat in its own way.

Good luck with yours! I'll be keeping an eye on this.

I've had a '70 CB750 since new and it is my favourite bike to ride. First superbike. First production street bike to have disc brake. Smoooooth as silk and reliable. Mine has never left me stranded - unlike aaaall of my Brit bikes and my GL1000. Fix it up and enjoy it.

I can't say whether a 77 cb550 headlight assembly will be a bolt on or not but yours is missing the fork ears that the original headlight bucket would've mounted to. All in all it looks like reasonably clean bike that just needs some TLC.

That is correct. I grabbed the ones from the 550, so I will have to sit down and cross reference part numbers to see if it is the right one. Gotta get rid of that tiny light on it!

Well, with a little looking at part numbers, it seems the 750 uses a different “ear” for the headlight than the 550 did. The headlight is the same though! :-D

This one is going to sit for a bit...perhaps a box will be started for parts to keep them all together.

A single cammer! Those are getting harder to find every year. Congrats on you purchase. What a good buy and looks like it’s in very good condition. Just time and love and she will be back in the road!

somewhere I saw repo side covers for the 750's... there must be a big enough market someone is 3-d printing them

The reproduction market for the 750s (the early ones, at least) is actually pretty robust. There isn't much you can't get brand new for those bikes.

Now, CHEAP, on the other hand? Not so much.

Yes, seems nothing is terribly cheap with these things. I was hoping to find a side cover that in a perfect world didn’t need paint, but perhaps I can match it easy enough. Guessing the right side cover was lost almost as much as the left ones of the Wings.

Go to SOHC forum http://forums.sohc4.net/ and sign up.
A member there makes reproduction side panels from better material than the originals. I tried to find his thread but couldn't because I suck at forum searches. It's in the for sale section. But definitely join this forum. You'll get lots of technical help when you need it. As with all of these forums it takes a little time to sort out who really knows something and who just thinks they do.
