One of the grandkids has decided to join the ranks. He located and made a deal on this 78 GS550. Went with him to pick it up and brought it home to my house. Plan is to get it running here teaching him how to do a few things. It looks to be complete but has been sitting for a couple of years. He is all excited and ready to start working.

Back in the "Day", I bought a brand new KZ 650C and my best friend bought a GS550. Needless to say, we put lot's of miles on both. The GS is a bit of a wheelie machine too...

We have the side covers and it came with a book also. I'm guessing that someone changed out the front wheel. Inside the tank don't look too bad. Carbs are pretty dirty and we could only get it to run on three cylinders before paying a mere $550. The seat is in descent shape and there is part of the original tool bag under the seat. Front disk rear drum brakes seem to work. Guy said the lights and signals all work. Gonna clean it up a bit and make a to do list today.

There where two model, a 550 and a 550S, the front wheel is off the S model. 1979 they added a L model, following the "chopper" style that was of the time.

Pulled the carbs yesterday and they were pretty dirty. Got three of them cleaned and waiting for the kid to do the fourth. Cleaned up pretty good so far, couple spots on the frame need some touch up paint. Starter don't seem to work. Gets 12v at the post but no turn. Might pull it today to see if its repairable. Fabricated a seat hinge to replace one that was missing. Po already replaced the coils so they are new. Still got plenty to do.

It did run before we paid for it. Was running on three out of four cylinders with no unusual noises. Had hopes of a short ride but it was dumping fuel and barely staying running. Was enough to believe it would be ok. Pulled the starter and it was just dirty enough to not make contact with the armature. Cleaned up and some fresh grease on the bearings made all the difference.

Found a broken brake lite switch on the front brake, will have to source one from somewhere. Kill switch is missing the button and wires are twisted together. Kickstand hides beneath the exhaust and is hard to find with your toe. Starter is still iffy, will have to wait and see. Someone installed some nice braided steel lines on the front brake and it feels great. Hoping to have a battery here tomorrow and put the carbs back on to hear it run.

Hope this video will play. We got her running today but it was short lived. Floats were sticking and fuel was running out of the drain tubes. Also found the steering head sounds like the bearing is shot. Pulled the carbs back out and spent some quality time with the floats. Tomorrow is another day.

Not much progress today. Carbs are still dumping fuel. Paid John (jdvorchak) a visit to see if he could help. Float needles and seats appear to be shot. Looking around for replacement sets. Steering head has the upgraded roller bearings. Dropped the triple tree and packed the bearings with fresh grease. Tine to take a break and order some parts.

I had the L model. First new road going bike (maybe the the only) I ever owned. Many many miles. Road it to Texas
from PA straight out of the crate. Must have looked pretty funny on that thing. I loved it. It certainly did do wheelies.

Not much happening, waiting for parts. Found out the tach cable was broken. The tach itself was locked up and had to be freed. will still need a cable before I can test it again. Also found a parts bike for cheap on cl, waiting for response from seller.

Kill switch and carb kits are here. Carb kits have the name 'Sumo' on the box from Taiwan (never heard of them). Couple of the parts don't match up but there is enough to get us going again. Float needles seemed to seal pretty good. I just need it to cool off a bit so I can work outside.
