I just did the Vermont registration process. Send them the registration application, a copy of the bill of sale, pay the fees. 15 days later a plate and registration arrived. Now I'm going to my local DMV and have it transferred.

I won't go into detail, as there are several posts on the web about it, I just wanted to let folks know it actually works.

I did it for a 68 triumph 250.

Vermont does not issue titles on vehicles older than 15 years

You just have to watch it in certain areas. Parts of Illinois and some other areas won't process it if the seller is on a list they keep. I've done that before in Ohio and WV and it worked well.

South Carolina has a process of titling vehiles 25 years old or older.

In Oklahoma there is a process of obtaining a title on an abandoned vehicle. It involves a search for the owner and a mechanics lien. You spend about $300 for the process, but then it is yours

There is a bonded process in Washington. It requires a three year wait before u get a permanent title.

I've got a 75 cb400 with no title and it hadn't been registered in so long the identity of the last registered owner was a big unknown and Indiana was making me jump through hoops to find out and according to my local license branch as it's called here, the Vermont loop hole wasn't accepted. What made it even more frustrating was nobody could tell me exactly how I could find out who that last registered owner was due to privacy laws nor could they tell who to talk to that would know how. Proving I've done my very best to locate the last registered owner is essential when filing a court order for a lost title. I eventually got REAL lucky and found a 75 cb400 (they're pretty rare) rolling frame with a legit title for $300 which is about how much it would've cost me to get a title for the other one had I succeeded in getting a court order for a new title for it.

Ohio has no process at all. It's really a shame because most of the bikes without titles aren't hot, the titles got lost or the bike wasn't worth doing the transfer 30 years ago, etc. Now you have bikes with legitimate historical and collector interest that can not be titled unless you do something like the Vermont thing.
