A sailboat offers the protection of the rigging and mast, which is grounded to the water. Or so they tell me

Saw one when I was in a marina in Florida, where lightning hit a radio antenna mounted on top of the mast, split the fiberglass antenna, and came down the wire, and fried the radio. No one on board was hurt

Ugh. I just rode home from work across the front edge of a storm with this on my mind...

My first thought when reading the story was "Now some riders will have another excuse not to wear a helmet!"
My condolences to the family...

The "bonding" of a sailboat rig to the hull and keel is great in theory, but I have seen first hand that it does not always do work as advertised. A fellow sailor's boat was struck a couple of years ago in our marina. The strike travelled down the mast as expected, but ended up blowing three holes thru the hull. Fortunately, the water depth in the slip was fairly shallow, and the boat "sank" until the keel was resting on the bottom, with the water level settling at about 2 ft above the waterline. They were able to recover the boat and complete a repair, but the damage was impressive.
