1978 CB550K Four Restoration

#1

Post by flyin900 »

I acquired this bike a couple of years ago and it was a one owner bike (my favorite kind) that was only used for a few years from new; it has sat in his dry garage since 1985. I have been looking for one of these models in nice shape for years that has not been cafe'd, which itself is a rarity these days.

It was in VG condition overall with dust and dirt and some very minor surface rust, yet complete and unmolested. It even has many of the factory yellow paint markings on the key bolts which was nice to see. I decided to take it mostly apart, yet I did leave the motor in the frame and worked around that area to do a clean up and touch up of a few frame areas with matching black paint. Heck it still had the factory Bridgestone tires on those rims. :-D

The exhaust while VG did have a few small rust holes in the upper rear section of two mufflers which is an unusual spot, as most Honda mufflers rot at the header/muffler join section. It seems there are some baffles up in the back area of the muffler that collected moisture and since this bike was only used sparingly the rot happened.
I was very fortunate to find a NOS set of mufflers at a small Honda dealer here in Ontario and scored them for a fraction of new. I repaired the set off the bike and cleaned them up really well and sold them to contribute to the refresh cost.

So here are a few pictures of the before clean up as it arrived at my home. Only 7499 klms or about 4700 miles.

I have been working on it for the past season and have it totally finished now. I replaced the original DID rims with new DID and cleaned the hubs and used the original spokes. The original ones while VG were pot marked on the edges and they would not clean up to my satisfaction. With the new exhaust and all the cleaning and detailing it now looks factory fresh these days.

I am going to keep it for shows and such, as it is too nice to ride IMO. I have enough riders these days and this one I think is better to save in this state, rather than continue to degrade the rarity of the condition and low mileage.

I have some finished pics somewhere that I will load that shows the bike completed and ready to go. I was able to just buff the bodywork with compound to get the finish back to new with no need to reshoot any paint or clearcoat on the cans.

Very nice. 👍 Glad you got it and not someone who wouldn’t care for it like you do. That will be well worth keeping it in pristine shape to share with fellow enthusiasts.

Wow, what a beauty. 4700 miles. She’s been hardly ridden. Love that blue stripe on tank. Looks like original tires😎
The 500-550 was a better handling bike than the 750 I’ve read. Never owned a single cammer.

Took a few new pictures of the finished bike. My tree is stealing the show too. Not sure what kind it is, yet this spring it has put on a wonderful display.
