interesting. All the AGM's I've bought are sealed. How do you fill them? And with what? If they send the "acid" separate, how is that different then in the battery? So I buy the Yuasa brand battery which ships dry, with the acid packaged in a plastic 'six-pack' type sealed container inside a sealed plastic bag, inside a box, inside the larger shipping box. How that meets shipping requirements vs. a wet battery I don't know.
The six-pack container matches the cell openings on the battery, and you simply turn it upside down and push it into the openings, which punctures the seals, and the acid drains into the battery. IIRC, you let the battery sit for 12-24 hours to allow the mats to fully absorb the acid, slow charge it, and seal it with the supplied rubber seal strip. Pretty much the same process as a typical lead acid battery...

this one came with the acid inside a plastic jug in a cardboard box..
when I worked at CT all of our batteries came in dry and we filled them when we sold one.
They started sending in batteries that were full of acid and oh man..talk about a cluster..
Between leaking acid ruining a bunch of stock, batteries with sulfated plates that were "brand new"...
It got so bad before I gave a battery to a customer I took it to the service dept and load tested it to make sure it would actually work.
I think that is the main reason batteries are shipped dry again..

eBay seller, chaparralmotosports sold me the last of 2 Yuasa YUAM6250H YTX24HL-BS dry charged AGM batteries I've purchased for my GL trike. August, 2019 it cost me $86.77. installed the battery a few minutes ago. It fired right up and it's showing 13.85V's at the battery terminals.

That is a pretty good number at idle. Might check it when reved up a bit say 2500 or 3 grand just to make sure it is not overcharging.

if it does over charge...should I be looking at the voltage regulator as the culprit?

Possibly, but just like on a Wing there has to be a "sense" system to tell the VR when to reduce or shut down the output. Many issues with the Wing's overcharging are due to this system having a build up of resistance in it from the years. On the Wing the sense system is fed through numerous connectors and the ignition switch. Every little bump in resistance from those connectors and the switch creates a small voltage drop, so if those systems are not maintained you may have a half of a volt or more disparity between what the VR see's and what is actually being fed into the Battery/ system. Most of the 1000's I have seen have about 14.5 fed into the VR but are actually pushing 15 at the battery. So they are a bit high. I generally do not go looking for correction unless they are over 15.

tks for the info. I checked it again with the engine higher in the rpm's and it stayed around 13.8 volts.

1) How often does she check the electrolyte and top it up if necessary?
A battery gives off hydrogen as it charges and oxygen as it discharges, which adds up to water so it is perfectly normal for the electrolyte level in a non-sealed battery to decrease a bit over time and need to have water added.
2) What was done to maintain the battery during the off season?
If it was just left to sit it is not surprising that it wouldn't last because batteries self discharge over time and as you know that can lead to sulphation if they aren't properly maintained. If not connected to a battery maintenance device (battery tender, solar charger &c) a battery should be re-charged every month during storage to counter the effects of self discharge.
If it was left in the bike, does the bike have a clock or a radio that is connected to power for memory? That can discharge the battery even faster than normal self discharge so disconnecting the battery for storage and re-setting what was lost from memory in the spring is the best option.
