So, really starting to get excited by this motorcycle. It has been sitting since 1986, and based on the exterior bright work, not in a climate controlled space. I didn't get keys with the thing, so I had not even been able to look into the gas tank, or lift the seat. Ordered a key from Fleabay, and had my first look this afternoon.
Whoever owned it did right by me. Drained the tank, and stored dry. There is some very light surface rust, but I am not even sure if it's enough to bother with.
The rear caliper was frozen up completely too. I disconnected the brake line and a bunch of molasses - looking fluid was evident. I was expecting the worst. Was able to pry the caliper off the disk, and used the compressor to pop out the piston. What did if find? Is it too much to hope for similar moving forward?

Well there is the offer of double what you paid from a member.
Like I said.... they are only original once. Finding an extremely low mileage bike is a rarity these days. I think your going to find lots of excellent condition parts as you progress further.
Evaporust in that tank and it will look like a brand new interior, as it is almost there now.

I am getting closer to finishing the strip down. Continue to be amazed on how unmolested this thing was - just lots of surface corrosion on every piece of unpainted metal.
Example: Chrome airbox covers, before and after
Colonel Brassy Metal Polish and 000 Steel Wool works pretty good. It can't get rid of all of the pits, but a pretty respectable finish IMHO. Lots more to go.

I'm guessing that's the cam chain run on the left side of the engine? I always thought that was an interesting design feature for that particular engine. With the 3 cylinders and shaft drive I guess it's just a bit of an oddball all around, but still really neat. Good sound, too.

Yep, I guess with just three pots, you can't put the cam chain in the middle like they did with most UJM's. This is my second XS750, so I have some familiarity with the triples. They are torquey, which makes them great for around town. Down a little on peak power compared to the DOHC Honda or Suzuki motors, and of course the shaft drive does sap some power, but I find them quite nice riding machines. And the exhaust note is very unique.

Well, I finally got around to pulling the carbs. OMG! I knew I had some issues to deal with, as the choke actuator will not move. I got the carbs off, and the pistons will not lift. Oh oh. As the P.O. had stored the bike with a dry tank, I was expecting that the float bowls would be empty - NOT. Drained this sludge out of the float bowls:
Now trying to get the float bowls off - all screws removed, but bowls will not budge even with gentle persuasion with a nylon-faced hammer. Should be interesting.
