Just retired……again. I’m wingless.

It’s been a short and fast run for me in the Wingdom. I bought my first Wing, a 75, in December of 2020. It came with some nice Abe Henry wheels and a Jardine exhaust. Restored it to as near to original as I could.

I Enjoyed the experience so much that I kept searching the local ads for more early Wings.
While restoring the 75 I bought a rough ‘80 and a much neglected ‘83 not realizing that hardly any parts from either would fit the ‘75.
After finishing the ‘75 I decided to build a bike with the best of the parts from the ‘80 and ‘83. The 83 came with a title so the finished product was titled as an 83 with just about everything else 80.

After selling it I couldn’t stay off CL and FB marketplace and found a neglected 76. I told a guy that had missed out on buying the 83/80 that I was building another one and ending up selling him the 76 in primer. He wasn’t going to wait until it was 100% finished and take a chance on missing out on it too.

I thought I was done then was offered a collection of parts including two frames, one with a title, three motors and boxes and boxes of parts
Well, I had to do something with all this mess so I proceeded to piece together another one. The initial investment was way less than the rest but ended up second in money required to complete right behind the 75.

I really enjoyed riding the ‘75 and being an old Harley rider I am amazed at the power, smoothness and durability of these old Goldwings. Problem is at 70 years old and beating myself up over the years which included a trip to intensive care with major neck trama in 1980 and resulting lasting effects even riding a smooth running Goldwing leaves me with severe neck pain in too short of a while.
So instead of having the ‘75 sit around collecting dust and deteriorating from neglect I opted to find it a new home also. I do believe all 4 will have better lives.
I’m not saying I’m completely through with Goldwings as I have pieced together a good running ‘77 GL1000 engine from the parts stash. It is currently for sale on the local web but if I find another cheap non running bike before it sells I may start up again.
At 70 years old I still enjoy wrenching and need some kind of prospect to keep me limbered up.
Now that I have bored you with my short but busy Goldwing history I want to mention how much I have enjoyed my time here on this forum. This has to be the Holy Grail of early Goldwing information and I couldn’t imagine finding a more knowledgeable and helpful bunch of folks to deal with. Thanks to you all and even though I’m currently Wingless I’m going to hang around a while longer.

Great story Mike and yes stay around lots of info still needed, as you have learned lots in the short time you put all those bikes together. I hear you on the 70+ milestone too, being there myself. Still not too beat up, yet the day will come when a 650 lb bike is too much.
Just not today. lolol
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Hitting that milestone this year. Sold the '06 GL1800 last year and replaced it with a new Spyder RTL. Still have a GL1000 that gets ridden just a couple times a month in good weather, but is fun to take to shows and club gatherings. RD400c is light but a little squirely for me - still fun though! I still have fun rescuing abused bikes and marveling at how POs can dream of new ways to screw up good bikes. I enjoy the challenges!
