Who has the Fastest GL1000?

#1

Post by dontwantapickle »

Winston's blown LSR bike did 136 mph. on the Bonneville Salt.
Which is really pretty good considering the HP. losses due to the altitude.

What is the fastest TIMED, CONFIRMED, VERIFIED GL1000 that you know of?

(Our bikes speedo's are not that accurate so they can't be believed. Butt dynos are even less accurate)

Well … my old 1100 was clocked at 126 on the start/finish on a track day …
The manager said it was a record … for a bike with a sleeping bag on the back

No Cyborg, maybe go back and read the first post in this thread.
I said that it is Winston's bike.
My bike has only been 134.

I was with Winston when we set the class record at an east coast drag run. So I know the bike. Would have to ask, how many other Goldwings ran at Boniville, or even other bikes in his class. Just wondering

Rebel claimed to have a ticket for 135 on his 75.
I have wound every bike I have owned out and back when it was still fresh (90,000 miles) the 78 would read 122 on gps. Seems like all my other (4 cylinder models) top at about 115 or so.

As far as I have been able tell, Winston and I are the only ones running GL1000's on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
The class that his bike is in is:
APS-CBF 1000 (Altered Partially Streamlined - Classic Blown Fuel 1000)

The current record in his class is 156.852 mph. It was set in 2019 on a 1974 supercharged ironhead sportster.
That is a Very tough speed to beat. Z Man engineering know how to build fast Harley engines.
This is their bike both with and without bodywork. ( currently holds the record in both classes):

The interesting thing about going fast at Bonneville is the density altitude.
The salt flat are at 6000 ft. adjusted altitude and a naturally asperated engine loses 3% of it's Horsepower
for every 1000 ft. of elevation gain.

That means that just taking your bike from sea level to 6000 ft. it will lose 18% of it's power.
Blowers when adjusted correctly can compensate for the HP loss by cramming more air into the engine.

So far, I have just used the carbs and pump gas with a very conservative tuning on the salt.
I know that if I was to take the bike down to sea level, it would go faster with no additional modifications.

How much faster? I have no idea.

I lived in Salt Lake City for a couple of years, and have been to the flates several times (many years ago). Not a lot of bikes back then, but I did love to watch the streamliners. I have to admit that the last time I saw Winstons bike, I thought it would need a lot of work to be a contender at the flats.
