Introducing my self and my new ride 1976 GL1000

Post by Earthwing »

Hello!

I'm new here and I thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself and my new (2me) 1976 GL1000 currently dubbed "Goldilocks"

The original listing:

My friend Steven and I inspecting her:

Here she is in the trailer ready to come home:

The bike currently does not run. We were able to get it started but it was full of old fuel and I am sure the carbs need some TLC. It needed a new starter solenoid which I've already installed.

So here is what I have planned so far:

- Carb rebuild using Randakk's kit
- New air filter
- Check/set ignition timing
- Oil Change
- Rad flush
- New fork seals

I have already learned so much about these awesome bikes and I am looking forward to learning and sharing my journey.

I have many more detailed pics that I intend to post in a separate thread with the hopes that those with more experience on these bikes might have a look and let me know if there is anything obvious that I should know about.

For now that's all!

Thank you so much!

Steve

Hi and welcome.

I am on a similar journey, 1976 model, though mine looks to have a lot more bits missing than yours.

As above, it makes sense to change the belts ASAP. You need to do them before they break and you will likely be doing them before you plan riding it, so makes sense to do it before you crank it again. Just in case...
1976 GL1000 barnfind, not run since 1991. My first Goldwing, which joins my 1990 Suzuki VX800 in the stable.

Welcome from Maine!

Great looking bike. You'll have it on the road in no time, I'm sure.

And start a build thread over in the restorations/projects forum, if you've not yet done so. It's a great place to document progress and to get real-time input if/when you need it (or perhaps even when you don't :) ).
Avatar is a summer '21 photo of the Blue Phoenix, our 1983 GL1100I rescue gone naked.

In the Stable and Ridable
1992 ST1100 - my longer haul tourer
1992 XJ600S - son's streetfighter
1987 VFR700 - son's latest, in blue/silver
1983 - GL1100I - naked Blue Phoenix (son's, really)
1982 GL1100I - naked bagger Cabernet
1979 GL1000 - Ginger Lynn, but not that Ginger Lynn (Wing and a Prayer)
1978 CB550K - son's cafe (carb issues still vex)

Active Project(s)
1979 GL1000 - Confirmed one owner, with original paperwork. Vetter fairing and bags, off the road in dry, heated storage for 35 years.

Sold
Not lookin' back to avoid regrets

Cool, yes I will do that. I’ll have the timing belts in hand next Wednesday so
I’ll be tackling that job soon, along with a few others things on “the list”.

Cheers,

odd isn't it. in 1976 they could not sell the yellow wings and so some of the 77's have parts that were painted over the yellow

Really...! I did not know that... (not like I'm going to go scratching any paint off anywhere though...;)

I had a yellow 1985 Z-28 when I was stationed in Florida back in the Eighties; beautiful car, I loved it until I got out in '87 and actually had to make a living...I think you're either a 'yellow' guy or not. And his bike even has a Brown seat! My red '75 has a brown seat, you don't see them very often, it kinda grows on you. Looks like '78 pipes on this one, too. Still, it's a very nice bike; I'd love to get my hands on a yellow one.
