KevDawgs 1981 GL1100 introduction

#1

Post by KevDawg »

Hello All,

I am now a member to the Goldwing world. After riding my two bikes a 1972 cb350 and a 1983 KZ250 for a couple of years I wanted a bike with more power. As many of you know Goldwing's tend to be fairly cheap horsepower. While scrolling through the Facebook Market place I found a bike that caught my interest. a 1981 gl1100 interstate for $300. I felt like the bike had some potential if I put some time into it. Picked up the bike and hauled it back on my trusty Honda accord.

After sitting for about a decade about anything rubber needs to be replaced. I plan on rebuilding the brakes, forks, rebuild the carbs, replace the tires, clean out the gas tank, replace wheel bearings, replace timing belts, radiator hoses, fluid changes, and probably some other small details. Let me know if you have any suggestions of work I should complete when the bike is apart. I am planning to remove the fairing but possibly keep the saddle bags due to that this will be my long haul bike. Hopefully I can be forgiven for my sins haha.

I plan on making posts of progress with the bike as I fix it up and get it going on the road. So keep an eye out. Thanks!

Welcome from Maine!

Yours looks like a really good example at that price point. It'll have more horsepower than you'll need in any real-world, open-road situation. The bags are quite useful, and they have turn signals built in - bonus!

Once you get that bike off the trailer and get to digging in, please start a build thread over in restorations. We can follow along. Of course, we'll also supervise by offering words of encouragement and advice - all from the comfort of our homes.
