New2U Bike? Read Me.

#1

Post by Roady »

We love our by-ikes,
Oh yes we do-oo,
Replace the timing belts,
And you will to-oo.

Yep ... hang around long enough you will soon join the chorus too. It's not just the miles they've gone ... it's also the years. If you don't have proof of the belts' age, just replace 'em. Mine went on a few rides before doing the belts. Yeah, I was young and reckless back in 'ought-7, but I needed to fall in love first. So, I can't slight anyone for the same thing. But, do take it easy and know that you're taking a risk.

Below is a list of threads and helpful web pages for you. Get to know your bike while spending a few weekends doing these procedures. Around here this is known as Quality Time.

First and foremost, get to know our ShopTalk page. It's a well cataloged collection of our most valuable references and should be the first place you look when searching for a solution to a problem. Below is a sampling of the helpful write-ups you'll find there.
  1. Changing the Oil by Roady, NGW. A simple 1-hour procedure to get you involved with your new bike.

  2. Recommendations for New Owners of a GL1000 by Randakk (Randall Washington). Much of this applies to all motorcycles.

  3. Starting a GL1000 after a Long Lay-up by Randakk. Also applies to all makes and models.

  4. Timing Belts, Removal/Installation by Octane (Lars), NGW. This is certainly THE most important thing you will do for a new2U Wing.

  5. Front Engine Renewal Project, GL1100 by Roady, NGW. Things that should be addressed when getting into the timing belts. All models.

  6. Randakk's Carburetor Kits Get the video and/or book when you order the kit and get a discount.

  7. Carburetor Rebuild by Octane, NGW. For GL1000 but much applies to all 4 Cylinder Wings.

  8. Carburetor Removal, GL1100 by Roady, NGW. Similar in all years.

  9. Carburetor Overhaul, GL1100 by Roady, NGW. Tips, tricks & tools for all GL1*00s.

  10. Brake Rebuild by Octane, NGW. GL1000 specific but all models benefit.

  11. Valve Clearance Adjustment by Roady, NGW. All models.

  12. Tips, Tricks & Tools by Octane, NGW. Includes contributions by many other members of this loony bin.

  13. GoldWing Shop Manuals collected by RebelRouser, NGW. Handy PDF versions, but, do yourself a favor and buy a Honda, Haynes or Clymer for your model.

  14. Large Wiring Diagrams Collected by Sidecar Bob. Be sure to download the LARGE version.

  15. Search Tutorial Probably the best tool you can put in your box.
__________________________________________________________________________________

Plus, as an added bonus ... we will escort you through the process. There are a couple of forums here that you'll want to get familiar with. General questions and discussions should be posted in Tech Discussions. And, create a thread for your project in either Members Restorations and Projects or UnderGround CustomiZing to get help and share your progress.

Please post pictures. We like lots of pictures. :orange There's even a How-To for that.

When Asking Questions, please give as much info as possible:
  • What year & model is the bike? (Hint: edit your Profile to include this info.)
  • Are there any mods pertinent to the question?
  • What work has been done (if any) to resolve the problem?
  • How long was the bike parked?
  • Is this a daily driver or a restoration/customizing project?

Roady, this is a GREAT post! I think it should be a sticky in the welcome and introduction forums... I really like the tutorial on using the SEARCH. never could figure how to limit the searches, so now I might, I say MIGHT, stop asking so many stupid questions!

smash Change the timing belts smash I think I get it now!

Totally agree with this. It would help everyone.

There must be a way of having this page as a 'click in' before you can access the forums.

Yes, I know some would see that as a nuisance but I really think it may reduce the number of times we answer the same question and also encourage new members to read other information that they might not have come across before.

Speaking as one of the newbies .... this info is TOO good not to have it as a sticky somewhere on this site. Wow!

Hey Roady -
I don't know if this related to this post but some touch up painting tips could be useful to bring out the luster once you get that sucker ready for the road.

I'm pretty sure there's some talented people out there that could provide some do's and don'ts to that subject. ;)

It would be nice to be able to include ALL of the helpful posts. But that would just get ridiculous, might as well just look through every dang post on the whole site.

It was hard to narrow it down to just the few ... now I want to add more.

Every time a new member asks a question it reminds me of another one that needs to be here.

I'm starting to think about a popup window where you select from scroll lists to narrow down a search.

Too busy trying to get my bike back on the road, though.

Maybe when the snow flies.

great list... it can be SOOOOOOO frustrating when someone says "my bike died, now what do I do...." , or "it is making a funny noise..." or "it feels different"

the more specific the better.... and pictures never hurt

we love you birdie.... oh yes we do... oh I loves birdies... to eat right through
