I see there are loads of great info here. I have an 83 Interstate and want (need) to rebuild the brakes. I'm curious as to why aftermarket parts were chosen for the caliper rebuild kits and genuine honda kits were used for the master cylinders? Also, I called the local honda dealer and was given 2 different part #'s for the front calipers, but in searching the aftermarket, there seems to be no distinction between the two. I also noticed there wasn't any mention of the brake pads used, are there any preferred brands? Any info would be great.
thanks,
Mark

What do you mean by "aftermarket parts were chosen"? Who chose them?

The front calipers on the '83 are different sizes. One is linked with the back brake lever. For the brake pads ... do not go with the cheapy's that can be found all over the web. Either EBC's or O'Reilly Auto does stock good quality pads for our bikes.

What I was looking at was the Brake Rebuild that Octane posted, but I now realize that post was/is for the GL1000, which answers the question about the same part #'s for the front calipers.
He did mention that he used aftermarket rebuild kits for the calipers. Do you recommend sticking with Geniune Honda for all the rebuild kits, or are there aftermarket kits available that are worth using?

I have not rebuilt my calipers so can't confirm what vendor you should use.

Go ahead and post your question in the Tech Discussions forum, you'll get lots of opinions there.

hi all,
newby here, but oldie to naked wings.

the person asking about brake rebuild parts, I have bought parts from JC Whitney, in Chicago. They have a very decent common wear part rebuild kits for various things like brake calipers and brake master cylinders, stators and rectifiers and so on... for wings. They ship worldwide and their prices are very reasonable for parts.

My rebuilds have lasted about 5 years and going with their parts.

I can not put in links but JCwhitney dot com.

for general salvaged parts I use ebay a store called pinwall
naked ones, past 76, 80, 83,
present naked ones (2) 84s, and 97 valkyrie (has original battery)
past with tux, 84, 90, 93SE

If you need rust, I have a tank of a rebuild bike full of it. Amazing - stalagmites and stalactites for your viewing pleasure.

All kidding aside, this is an incredible thread. Thank all of you so much for putting this information out there.

I presently own my very 1st Honda 1983 Goldwing Naked, with a whopping 17,000 miles on it, the price was reasonable or so I thought. haha, She wasn't much on Looks but I don't care that much about the cosmetics right now , that will wait until I get the motor working up to the standards of having confidence for the long Rides to come.

I've been bouncing around on all the sites for our bikes and I'm settling in on the one Name After my bike. btw did I tell you I fell in love, while only having 3 rides with maybe 40 miles accumulating on the meter. It is a Great Bike to add to my addiction. Thanks again for excepting Me to the forums.
