Proud new owner of 76 LTD barn find
Hello Everyone,
I recently pick up a no running 76 GL1000 LTD from a co-worker for FREE! It has been sitting on the kickstand since 1995 in his garage and he needed to get rid of it so I gratefully took it off of his hands. He said that he parked it due to some bad fork seals that killed the front suspension.
I have not tried starting it yet but the engine does turn over only letting penetrating oil sit in the cylinders overnight. All that being said I am excited about diving in head first and trying to get this bad boy back on the road.
My plan of attack was to run down the 20,000 maintenance schedule and complete everything on the list but I am wondering if this is the right move? Does anybody have any suggestions on order of events? I have already read that replacing the timing belts are probably the first thing that I should do.
I will post pics once I get home from work.
Thanks!
Alex

Obviously your Dad can't wait for you to get it going. Nice find.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Yes, there will be a lot of advice for you.
You've done the right thing by not trying to start this LTD. Trying to start it now could be disastrous. I strongly suggest that you go here and read everything that Randakk has on his site regarding new GL owners and, most importantly, starting a GL after a long lay-up (this being the most critical for you).
Before you hit the starter button, you must change the timing belts. This is mandatory. If one, or both, of those belts brake, you will have a mess on your hands. This, and other critical information will be covered in Randakks thread. You have a lot of work ahead of you e.g., carbs, fuel tank cleaning, brake and master cylinder rebuild, fork seals, (possibly) a fuel and water pump and the list goes on. Take one thing at a time and don't get overwhelmed. All the questions you have can be answered by the members of this site. Stick around, read Shop Talk and get involved.
Good luck and have fun.

How do you people keep finding "old barn finds" when I can't even find an old barn? Nice find and a good project.

Here's a one of my favorite restoration videos to get your juices flowing. I'm casting my vote to have you take that LTD back to it's original factory condition.

You are one lucky guy - great find! You can't beat free unless someone pays you to take it away!
Don't let all the stuff you read at Randaak's discourage you. Most of it isn't all that bad and in the process, you're going to learn a LOT about the bike. When you have it ready to run, you'll be glad you took the time to do everything right.
Congrats!

Three amazing Grandsons and a beautiful granddaughter, four great kids, two crazy cats, a husband who is fun to have around and two great motorcycles, one is an 1200 Interstate currently apart being painted and a Harley. (hey, I believe in riding, and everyone should ride what they love. And I happen to have MBS)

Re: Proud new owner of 76 LTD barn find
Congratulations on the new bike. These GL`s are like no other bike, A bit tight to work on and the fuel system has to be spot on or you risk doing it all over so take your time.
My find sat since 1990 and it has been about 8 months getting it ready, I get so much done then I need to walk away and research , think about things. I`m about ready to fire mine up.
Good luck with yours.
