Bought it this week. Has 86k on odo. Got it started last night for 1st time in months or really in years maybe. Engine is quiet and runs smooth! That was a relief! An ounce of fuel into air intake, with a squirt of starter fluid, a jump off my Jeep and fired right up! That was a great feeling! It wont stay running. So at least I know where to start checking. Tank has some rust but not sure how bad. Next step is to check fuel pump, filter & lines. If OK next will be removing carbs for a rebuild. Previous owner or 2 or more striped the Vetter stuff off. I took that BIG ugly seat, ugly sissy bar and ugly rack off 1st thing. Want to get it on the road before I start to sink any money into it. If it suits me then I will go forward to semi bob it or whatever.
Spent last several months working on a 15 year old Moto Guzzi. It sat for 8 years & had not been running since 2006. Very exciting to get it running but had to replace fuel pump, filter, lines, injectors, seal the rust tank and a bunch of other work. I love the way it drives especially with the after market muffs. But I sit too low on it which is not so comfy for me. Have a feeling the GW will be the same.
Anyway glad to find "Honda Gold Wing (1975-1987) Maintenance, Tech Tips and Mods" page.
QUESTIONS:
1- To remove fuel tank engine comes out first? Appears it can only go forward.
2 - Any tips on where I should start on this forum, start on my bike, and what to do or not to do?
3 - Noticed some water under the right side under fuel tank. Hoping it is rain water seeping out???
New here! Glad I found ya'll! Got 1982 naked Aspencade this

Howdy from Canada, welcome to the club.
I will start with the NGW Mantra "Change the Timing Belts".
There is very good info/advice in the ShopTalk section on being a new owner of an old bike. That is the place to start for sure. Spend a few hours reading, before ya start wrenching.
Most of the 'water' leaks are either on the front of the engine, or in the heads. Water that far back is most likely rain water.
The fuel tank goes out the back end, no need to take the engine out.
Good Luck,
Keep asking questions, we are all here to help each other out!
Cheers,

swing arm too! Got it!82aspy wrote: wheel, swingarm then f/tank
I bought this even though it has 86,000 miles on it and was not running, but not in that bad of cosmetics condition for its age. Later I read where Randakk says these boxers are good for 250k mi. (with proper care) which was reassuring - just hope this project had "proper care" most of its life. Not interested in tearing into the engine or transmission components, but can deal with the rest - I hope!
