Hey folks
Hello everybody, my name is Will and I've been lurking here for a while. I inherited my love of Honda's from my dad (my first bike was a brand spankin new Shadow ACE). He had been a winger for years and years and years. When he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, he decided to start riding again and bought himself a big black 2010 GL1800. I had been without a bike since selling mine (got married...completed that project and on to better things now, like motorcycles again) so when we started riding I ended up trailing on his much used (and loved) '83 gl1100 Interstate. After he passed, the GL1100 became mine for good and I've enjoyed it the past year and a half in the form I grew up with. Like all sons, I want to make my own mark on the world and on my own riding style. So I've started the project to "de-grampa" this guy with the help of my 8yr old. I'm going in stages, with the first goal (in progress) being to remove the fairing, install new signals and headlight, and replace the bars. Baby steps. First goal is sort of a naked/bagger. I'm halfway there, since taking stuff off is easy. It is waiting for parts and getting things fit to new that's not so easy. Yesterday I crunched the little set-nub on my RH controls (apparently I didn't drill the hole big enough) so that's no fun. And then there's the issue of the cables and lines...
Anyway, like I said, I've been lurking here and on a couple other wing forums for a while and I'm a master at Google so I know theres an amazing amount of knowledge and experience on these boards. I hope to lean on you guys a bit to get me through the rough patches and hopefully I'll be able to do the same for somone else down the road.
Glad to be here. Looking at all those beautiful bikes is inspirational.

Welcome from Michigan.
Ask away. Some of these folks are real good at explaining stuff and everybody here is willing to share. If you go HERE and scroll down, you'll find a hi-res wiring diagram specific to the '83 Interstate.

Welcome from California and to the NGW. Very sorry to hear about your Father. (I'm currently recovering from all of the after-effects of stage 3.)

Re: Hey folks
Thanks for the welcomes, guys! I'm here in sunny Minneapolis, MN (I've already made one short trip to Speed Wheel in Jordan...going back soon).
As requested, here's a picture of where I'm at, more or less. Since this picture was taken (on my first day) I've removed the fairing brackets, the nose weight (what a mess of spaghetti waits for us inside there), the instrument hood, and swapped the bars for some Bikemaster Daytona bars (or maybe superbike? Have a clubman but I'd like to have a backseater sometimes, and a healthy spine). Waiting for my headlight brackets and turn signals to arrive in the mail (today I hope!). I picked up a pair of radiator covers off ebay for $30 (maybe a little steep) but haven't installed them yet. Need to get a headlight bucket eventually too.
My currect challenge (other than patience) is fitting the controls to the new bars and figuring out how to reroute the cables. I want to avoid replacing the cables with shorter ones if at all possible.
Once I have this baby in rideable shape again, I might consider a paint job...but that's really just icing.
Placerville, congrats! Miles seemed to be the best treatment for my dad. Riding made him feel great. Chemo made him feel like $$#@#$@. I'm sure you know all about that. Glad you're still here!

Re: Hey folks
Sooo....are there any tips for rerouting the throttle and clutch cables or is every shorter-handlebar bike a snowflake? I've seen that you can get shorter custom cables but time and time again I've seen those posts replied to by others saying "Just reroute the stock ones, it'll save time, money, and heartbreak."
Also, any suggestions for different/shorter grips? I don't think I can fit controls and grips on my new bars AND use bar-end mirrors because the GL grips will stick out past the ends...hrm. Maybe I just got bars that were too short.

Re: Hey folks
Welcome Smoo, I myself am new to NGW and am undergoing the same project, tho my final look will be more brat/tracker with the 1100 sticking way out to the sides...... Mine is an 82 Interstate that is now completely naked and I went with drag bars..... I have not yet re-routed the cables but simply made sure the extra length didn't get pinched or trapped anywhere. I have the same questions as you and am equally as reluctant to order a bunch of new, shorter cables. In complete honesty hardly anyone notices the "too-long" cables until I point them out. There is so much knowledge on this forum that with a little patience, just about anything you ask will be answered by a winger that has done it, prob more than once.... We're 1000 mi apart and wearing the same shoes.... I love this forum!
If you ride, we're family

Re: Hey folks
#1 - Have a plan. If you don't have a plan it's really hard to tell if your making progress.
#2 - A rattle can paint job looks terrific to bystanders when you're going by at 35mph.
#3 - Bars. So I wanted clubman bars. I picked them up for $20 on E-Bay. After all was said and done...
I had cut them in half to weld in a 1" spacer to widen them to clear the top triple tree.
Altered the fork stops to keep the bars from bashing the shelter covers.
Shortened the cables (actually Motion Pro) because cables sticking out all over looks "unfinished".
Ended up cutting off about 3/4" from the ends because the center spacer made them too wide.
All-in-all I have about a bazillion dollars into the bars. Way cheaper than putting spoke wheels on (multiple bazillions), but not cheap. Here is where you have to go back to #1 "Have A Plan".
