New to me bike Rebuild & Restore
Hello All. My name is Joe and I recently picked up a 1975 Goldwing. It is Candy Blue/Green. It had been sitting for an extended period of time and not running. The previous owner had it outside with the air filter cover off and it appears that water had worked its way down the carbs and into the right cylinders. Probably because the bike was on its side stand and this was the path of least resistance. Pressure was 120 PSI on the Left side and 60 PSI on the right. Anyway, I removed the valve head, cleaned it up, re-seated the valves and got the clearances in spec. There was some corrosion on the cylinder walls but I lightly honed each one with the pistons all the way down. I know that the engine is going to have to be split and redone but I just wanted to get her to fire up. Upon re-assembly I retested the pressure and got 120 PSI out of all cylinders. She fired right up and runs great.
The bike needs a total rebuild. My questions now are; can the cylinder walls be salvaged with light pitting? I have no images to show. And, should I rebuild the whole engine? Or just wait until it needs a full rebuild and just replace the top end gaskets, belts and hoses? Either way, the whole bike is getting a full original rebuild and the engine will be painted.
I am new to all of this and know that I have rambled on in about 50 different directions, so please go easy

Thanks guys for the responses. The day I picked up the bike was the day I bought new Timing Belts . I will take preventative maintenance any day. I read (probably on here) about the numbers going up as the bike runs.
Should I leave in alone internally and clean up the outside? Or, should I just split the case and start from the first bolt? This is my winter project and have put all other bike work aside. Wishful thinking for this winter,

I would wait until you have assessed how it performs before you plan your re build.

Thanks Gord. I appreciate it. That was my original intent. Get the bike running and take it out and see what I am dealing with. I know that I want to rebuild it either way. Just trying to sort everything out and get some professional advice. Unfortunately to get a good honed cylinder the engine has to be split. Any other bike that I have worked on I was able to remove the cylinders and hone or replace them. Welcome to the club.
Imo, unless the engine is smoking badly or is losing large quantities of oil, I would put it into service and ride it till the wheels fell off.
Like gord said, some enternals can be hard to find, so, why put yourself through it unless you have to.

Thanks Guys. I took the whole bike apart this weekend . Everything (But the engine); with the engine I am going to just going the clean up the outside, change the timing belts , clean up the pistons, re-tap the valves and check clearances, and replace all gaskets. Carburetor has already been rebuilt. Going to get the frame painted and start the rebuild process one part at a time by either rebuilding, replacing or re polishing. Hopefully I will be done by next season.
Also, I am probably going to go as original as possible. So the Vetter fairing is coming off along with any other aftermarket parts.
Wish me luck. I will try and post pics as I go.
