Jama exhaust & centre stand

#1

Post by buellxb1200 »

Hi

I'm a new member who has just become a proud owner of a 1977 Turquoise GL1000. it's fairly original, and in a fair condition. one of the modifications is a full Jama stainless steel exhaust. as the bike does not have the centre stand fitted, I believe it may be because of this exhaust, can anyone confirm if this is the case?

also my speedo trip knob is missing, can this be replaced or will it require another speedo?

thanks in advance.

I have the full Jama Stainless Steel exhaust on my 1979 and still have my center stand.
There is a piece that sticks out on the left side that is the bump stop for the center stand.
If you don't have one then previous owner removed for some reason.
See if that V shaped piece has the rubber stop on it if not they may have removed thinking it was hitting something it shouldn't.

I have just had a look and the bump stop is still on the exhaust, so the previous owner must have removed the centre stand for some reason.. thank you for your help, best get on ebay asap..

Welcome from Aust 6209.... The centre stand as has been said will work... Did you know (trust me here) the PO took up another career after mastering the centre stand and took the stand as a souvenir/reminder....

thank you for welcome. I only got the wing yesterday morning, I had it delivered to work and I have not touched it yet, unfortunately I was greeted with a small puddle of oil, which looks like it's from the drain bolt. I used to have the same model way back in 1979 (i know, I don't look old enough..), I cant get over how small it feels. I remember them as being huge. i've started it once and its a bit lumpy, going to get some new plugs and fresh fuel first. is it worth investing in Iridium plugs or just standard NGK's?

It would be very wise to give us as much history as you have gathered.. eg , last run, miles it done, recent work, carbs, ignition type meaning points or electronic?... Anything related to the mechanical history.... The brains trust will get on board soon and solve the basics....

Forget the iridium plugs ATM,,, Spend that money on new belts... very essential unless they were changed recently..

You can post pics after you have 5 posts....... Rules :IDTS: :IDTS: everybodys got rules anim-cheers1 anim-cheers1

I bought it from a dealer, who I asked to change the belts, how do I check they have been done? it says 38000 miles on the clock, I have no history whatsoever. it does start, but as I say is quite lumpy. the fuel is really low, so I have no idea how old it is, hence fresh fuel & new plugs. I'll get the standard NGKD8ES-L's quoted in the Haynes manual I got with it.

It has an MOT and appears in fair condition, I do not want to restore it, I want to use it, getting it running right is my first objective, after that the brakes (new braided hoses), electrics (the horn has a separate switch on the handle bars), then the cosmetics.

Now that you have a early GL1000 the next best thing to acquire is a workshop manual... Manuals available in the "Tech talk"thingy????. I bought a Haynes manual and a friend gave me a Clymer manual.... I cant seem to find the HAynes anymore, but i do like the coloured electrics of the Clymer, (photo copied to A3 and laminated) much more info and easily sourced IMO..

You WILL need it sooner than later.. anim-cheers1

welcome to NGW. I suppose the best way to know if the dealer changed the belts would be if they handed you the old ones when they were done

well I changed the plugs, the old one's didn't look that old. the right hand (off side) plugs were quite Black & sooty, the near side were not to bad. it would not tick on choke, I wondered if the choke was only working on one side, due to the off side plugs being sooty. the new plugs didn't make a lot of difference to the general running. I put fresh fuel in and rode it home (I had it delivered to work).

Firstly the general running was poor, when I pulled up at junctions the tick over was about 2000 rpm, making me wonder if it had been wound up due to the lack of tick over on choke, trying to pull away was a case of having to rev it up as its very lumpy low down and chugs away, once you get going it seems to be smoother. Secondly the braking, the front brakes just didn't work, back brake wasn't too bad. thirdly the handling, 50 mph produced a gentle weave. I don't think there is any oil in the forks.

This is all fixable, I am concerned about the general running, I think the carbs are going to have to come off and be looked at, I took the battery off when I got home and top it up as it was low, and put it on an Optimate, this morning I had all green lights, however I will get it checked as I seem to remember a low battery can affect the running.

I'll keep you posted..

low batteries do not effect running as long as the charging system is working. Now a dead battery will definitely stall an engine as the power goes through the battery and a dead cell will short out the power. Randakk has an excellent carb kit as well as a DVD on how to do them.
