85 Interstate in Birmingham, AL

New to the forum and new to Goldwing ownership!

A friend from another local forum posted up that his parts bike was no longer needed as he had traded his 85 Goldwing in for a 2016 (that thing is sweet). I have been looking for a project bike for a while since I have been helping a buddy with three of his projects! The price was listed as free but I had to make an 8 hour round trip to go get it! Needless to say the Goldwing is in my basement now!

The story is that the bike hasn't run in over 4 years and has been picked apart as needed for his daily driver. Known issues include missing exhaust, bad starter solenoid, locked up brakes (had to pull it on the trailer with his truck), dirty carbs, crusty clutch master cylinder, and battery.

Here is what it looked like when I got it!

Image

I have been working on it for just over a month now and have been going through Randakks recommendations for starting a bike that has been sitting! Here is the list of things I have completed as of today:
-Tore down and rebuilt all brake calipers
-Cleaned and rebuilt the carbs with Randakks kit
-Installed ebay starter solenoid with built in ATM fuse
-Rebuilt front forks (lots of rust and crud around the seals)
-New Shinko tires
-Replaced Thermostat
-New Timing Belts
-Currently running a radiator flush in it right now
-I replaced the sight glasses in the clutch and front brake master cylinders
-New AGM battery
-Got some used headers off of ebay
-New throttle cables

The plan!

I really want to strip this thing down but am not 100% sure of the final styling. It will probably end up as just a stripped down stockish bike as i don't have plans to cut the frame. The next major project is to figure out the issues with the clutch and then work on removing excess wiring! Wish me luck!

Here are some progress photos!

Welcome to the 'Wingdom.

Serious project you have there, like the progress and the photos.

Lots of good info in ShopTalk too.

Wow I have been busy! New baby arrived and I participated in a 24 Hour Enduro Race so I haven't gotten much done on the Goldwing.

I cranked her up this weekend and wouldn't you know, sitting for nearly a month has caused an idle issue. As in it won't!

I know I made a rookie mistake leaving ethanol fuel in her but it is history now and I have to fix her. I changed the fuel filter and put in some fresh fuel with Sea Foam hoping that would help but no dice yet (it has only been in two days).

I did take her for her inaugural trip around the neighborhood on July 4th and she was very well behaved except for the idle issue.

I think I have some trash in the pilot jets so I am planning to pull the carbs again this weekend and clean them up again.

This is just a crapy because before she sat I synced the carbs and she was purring like a kitten. Well lesson learned! Wish me luck!
