Finally got myself a goldwing. I think.
Hello all new to the forum. I'm a firm believer in becoming a part of a community that enjoys the same interests and hobbies as I. For the sake of knowledge and education and if nothing more than enjoy these machines.
That being said I recently acquired this gold wing, it's an 82 GL1100 standard. I've been a rider for quite a while though not a wing until now. I'm also quite mechanically inclined and I'm a certified diesel tech. Though once again not on a wing, or any motorcycle other than some dirt bikes.
Their is no doubt the bike runs good. The guy I acquired it from showed proof of the timing belt having been replaced recently and it looks it. Oil looks clean, doesn't leak or smoke for that matter. She ran strong on the roughly 45 mile journey home.
My first question is what are yalls opinions on riding the bike with the timing belt exposed? The guy went for the rat/cafe look I guess.
Don't worry I will post pictures. The bike has 65 thousand on it. Which seems high to me for a motorcycle, but after surfing the web about these engines might keep running for quite a while more.
I've got a box full of parts, he obviously didn't ride it everyday which is my intentions for the bike as it's my only form of transportation at the moment. Reason being is because he completely removed the whole rear brake assembly, disk, master cylinder, rotor and all. That's gonna have to be reinstalled quickly. Hopefully all of it is here.
Anyways as she is about to undergo some serious mileage is there anything yall could recommend me to do/ check. The oil is clean and fresh rotella diesel 15 w 40. Fork seals are new progressive rate spring conversion.
The only thing I see as a necessity are a front tire immediately and the rear brakes. The tire is not too bad but bad enough.
Here are the pictures and let me know your opinions or concerns.
Oh also the headlight is a rinky dink LED I haven't driven at night yet. That'll be my next issue..

Also the mechanical fuel pump was converted to an electic one, and the ingition relay is one from a Ford truck as I was told from the previous owner. But both seem to work properly. Cause for concern? I guess we shall find out together within a couple days/ weeks. Thank y'all once again

Welcome to the forum. The folks on this site are really a community that covers the globe. Lots of wisdom here. I'm a rookie mechanic in comparison to many on the site. So double check what I say with others. . .
But!
Seems to be a few parts missing! If the bike were mine, and I could find a couple of the scoops pieces for the radiator in the parts, I'd put the back on. I'm assuming the timing belt covers are in the parts lot. Definitely re-install them. There's good piece of mind in knowing that no piece of road or debris can hop between the belt and the cogs and destroy your ride. These are not clearance heads and don't do well if they jump out of time. (Yep, had it happen, and I know better). There are two interesting looking bolts on each side that will need to be found in the parts as well. I would expect that there will have been a couple of bolts put in the holes vacated by the original cover bolts, to keep the tensioners in proper place. Check out on the Shop Talks forum page - "Timing belt removal/Installation by Octane - - THE most important thing you will do for your Wing" and you'll get an idea what to look for.
Oh and one more thing - start a build thread. We are all voyeurs here, and love to see what others are up to with their projects.

Goldwings don't accelerate, they gain inertia.

Re: Finally got myself a goldwing. I think.
Welcome from Wisconsin! I'm partial to the 1100's myself. 60k for these engines is just getting broken in, and there are several members here with bikes running two or three times that. Rotella is a favorite oil here, as well. The electric fuel pump is a nice conversion, as long as it is low pressure (I don't recall offhand what is recommended, but it is in the single digits).
From the looks of it, the bike was originally an Interstate, with the bags and fairing removed. The rear shocks were originally air shocks, so those have been swapped, as well as the handle bars. You might also consider adding a fork brace if you're wanting to improve the handling; it really stiffens up the front end. I'm personally not a fan of running without the belt covers, but lots of people do. I've not heard of an 'incident' yet, lol! Enjoy the ride!

Re: Finally got myself a goldwing. I think.
Besides a rock jumping off the front tire or from an oncoming vehicle to take your belts out, it would be pretty easy for a pant leg or even a rag used to wipe things up to get in the pulley and make a mess. Worse yet, a finger of you or an unsuspecting child.
I ran mine without them before. I noticed the dust begins to get pushed into the empty teeth of the pulley and collects in the teeth. They never came off and I've not heard of one doing it running them open.
For looks a few here have cut the covers around the pulleys and used clear plastic to guard them.
Pics included on his first post!!!. You're going to do fine here. Ask away if you have concerns.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: Finally got myself a goldwing. I think.
Welcome to the club. One of the great things about these bikes is; if you need it, for the most part, you can find it. And all the great info you can get about them on forums like this one. Belt covers? Big YES in my book. Also, for me... a fork brace is a must. Not cheap, but worth every cent. When you put in the rear brakes, a part that seems to go missing is the little tin shim thing that goes behind the pad. Keep a eye out for that. Good luck. Looking forward to the build thread.

Re: Finally got myself a goldwing. I think.
Thanks for all the quick responses fellas. I appreciate a warm welcome into your community.
I agree that a build thread may have to become a reality really soon. As soon as funds permit. I'm pretty much open to any and all suggestions for mods/ tweaks to make this ride better or more fun or look Cooler lol
I have to go pick my parts box up from a friend's house that just happened to live right near where I bought the bike from. Then we can start getting down and dirty.
From what the guy was saying about the rear brake system the original reason for him removing it all was that it was seized. So possibly rebuilding the caliper and new lines and resovoir? Might have to happen we shall see.
And my opinion on the belt being exposed is if nothing else, being exposed to the elements will likely lessen the lifespan of the belt perhaps?
Got caught in my first rainstorm on the way home from work today. Was not an enjoyable experience expexially considering I had no riding gear.. luckily the non waterproof backpack provided a little protection for the cell phone and such.
First thing on my to do list is, front tire asap. It's kinda scary. I'll post some more pics here in a second to see if y'all agree. Then the rear brake system reinstalled and working flawlessly. Then full riding gear. It seems to rain very often here in Birmingham Alabama. Then updated headlight. The rinky dink one on there is no bueno haha. Then we shall see where the winds blows us lol. Once again I appreciate yalls welcomes. And I'm going to take some more detailed pictures for you guys .

Re: Finally got myself a goldwing. I think.
I'm definitely not digging the factory cluster thingy. I wonder about putting something more modern on their guage wise and all that. Any ideas? Overall I believe it to have been a well maintained bike for it to ride and be as clean as it is considering the age. Oh the rear tire looks like a dual sport tire.. it's brand new though. I'll put a picture of that too. Should I match the rear tire when I replace the front?
Anyways.. thanks again guys. Please keep some ideas flowing.
