Room for another Cheesehead?

#1

Post by Wiscokid »

I started riding again a couple years ago and was left wondering why I didn't do this earlier. I had picked up a CB900c after selling my ATV. I find myself going on CL and eBay searching for another bike. I wanted another vintage Honda but something bigger. I stubbled across this 1976 GL1000 sulfur yellow on a eBay charity auction for a boys home that Bart Star started many years ago called Rawhide Boys Ranch. Anyway I won the bike and although it was listed as a non-runner, I had faith it was well taken care of by the pics and I could get it running again. We drove a few hours and picked it up and she was better than I hoped. After getting home and reading several threads on this forum, following instructions patiently, it started up. The envelope I received with the manual and several magazine clippings on tips with the new Goldwing it became apperant someone took very detailed notes on the service. However, I noticed it had a timing belt change 125 miles ago but that was in 2006. So it has been sitting for a while to say the least but I'm glad to bring it back to life. Any thoughts on urgency to change the timing belt? It has 27,000 miles on it. I paid $810 plus tax and registration, it felt like Christmas!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/311907068887

The search is on now for a seat, tires, muffler and exhaust manifolds (rusty holes) while I hope the seafoam helps get her idling better. Tomorrow I am looking at a parts bike, with no engine, but has an original seat I like and a muffler without holes in it. He wants $200 for it but I have never seen a seat pattern like this. Any input on this being original or not would be most welcomed.

Change the belts. That long in one position is a concern. The price of Gates belts is more than worth the peace of mind.

Welcome from another 'Cheesehead!' I think you got a really good deal! As said above, change the belts, it's cheap insurance. The seat you have pictured isn't an original pattern.
Enjoy the ride!

Wow! Thanks for that great welcome. I will take the advise and get a new belt on while I wait for the headers to be welded. I look forward to getting it on the road soon. Too bad the sear isn't original, I'm going to get it anyway as these parts are hard to find.

I'm sure you can find an original seat at some point later, and sell the one you are picking up now. It looks to be in good shape, anyway. Where about are you located, if you don't mind my asking?

That's what I was thinking too. It actually looks nice on the bike too. I wonder if some white shoe polish would make the Honda Threads pop? I did purchase the parts Bike 1975 GL 1000 (Canadian) without the engine for $200. I'm listing a few parts on eBay to try and recoup my cash. It's spedo is in Km per hr.
Have you any idea what bike this tail light is from?

I live just east of Madison, off from Hwy 73 exit. Where abouts are you?

I live near Prairie du Sac, about 30 miles south of Wisconsin Dells, and work out of Madison. Not too far apart!
No idea what that taillight configuration is, but there were many companies making accessories for Wings in the '70's and '80's. It's quite the setup, lol!

You live in a beautiful area Track. I love to ride along that stretch of the WI River. Ferry Bluff is a favorite stop.

I would like to take it back to original, it would be great to someday be able to show it. I'll probably keep the vetter bags and ferring but sell the big honking tail lamp and parts off the 1975 I got the seat from. I'm on a budget so it may take some time. My goal is to be able to drive it in a couple weeks. This muffler was much needed. Still need to do brakes, tires and of course the timing belt.

Yeah, I love cruising along around here, lots of lovely, twisty country roads.

Just an FYI, that seat grab rail on the parts bike might help defray the cost of your project. If it's in good shape, they can fetch a pretty good price. Same goes for the headlight ears if the tabs for the turn signals haven't been cut off.
