New to Goldwings (not new to bikes though)

#1

Post by NikAlex »

Hello to all.
About a month ago I bought my second Goldwing, a 1980 GL1100I, with the intention of turning it into a naked bike conversion. Then much to my wife's dismay, a couple weeks later found this 1980 GL1100 Standard which a previous owner had added period original Hondaline bags to. So now I have 2.

I have ridden quite a few different bikes but have to say this is one of my absolute favourite rides. It handles much better than I expected. As the over-used phrase goes...I'm lovin' it.

This one is a keeper.
Cheers, Roman

Thanks for the responses and welcome.

I did just change the timing belts. No clear records when it was last done. Now I know. On the weekend by yours truly! (-;
The old ones were Honda timing belts and looked great visually - I know you can't tell age or condition of these by sight.
I used Gates belts.
I also changed the engine oil and filter.
Flushed the cooling system and added new coolant (mixed with distilled water 50 / 50)
Added a K&N air filter.

Checked all air pressure settings, tires and suspension.
Fork air pressure was zero, seemed soft to me. I was a bit worried that wasn't going to hold air, but she is steady at 18 psig for a week now. (and rides much nicer)

Bike appears to have only 61,000 kms on it (Speedo shows 78,000 kms - I have limited documentation indicating a change of speedo)

All in all I am really impressed with this bike so far and am riding it every chance I get (although mostly only commuting back and forth to work)

Cheers, Roman
