New bike, new member

Post by MDfootballcoach »

Hello all,
So about a year ago I was offered a 1982 GW1100A for the low price of removal from my brother in law’s garage. He was given it some years back by a family member, and isn’t quite sure of it’s history. One thing he did know was that it needed a new starter. It was last inspected in 2007 and from what I can tell that was the last time it ran. I’m excited to cut this thing down but I’m looking to get it running first. I’ve been lurking for a couple weeks now soaking up information like crazy. So far I’ve gotten the starter replaced. Today I pulled the carbs. Is self rebuilding using Randakk’s kit the way to go or should I look for a carb shop? Any other tips /things to hit for a bike that hasn’t run in a while is much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome aboard from Indiana.

On the carbs. Only you know if you could handle that. Randakks kit is the one to get. Along with the video if you go that route. GL carbs are probably the hardest I ever did the first time. 10 plus years ago. After doing lots of inline four carbs. Now I do them all the time. A "Randakk approved rebuilder". But like I said, only you know if you think you could do it.

Welcome from Wisconsin! +1 on the Randakk kit. The video is for the 1000 carbs, though. They are a bit different. Randakk did offer a book to accompany his 1100 kit, which helped a lot with my first set. If you are persnickity, thorough, and patient, give the DIY thing a shot. If not, send them out to someone like Robin, above. I wouldn't take them to just any shop. Familiarity with the GoldWing carbs makes all the difference, IMhO...

Thanks all for the welcome. I plan on doing the belts next. I figure I’ll diy the carbs as well.

While the video is for the 1000 carbs it does show some things that will help doing the 1100 carbs too. especially for the first timer. ;)

Welcome to the club. I also recommend you start a build thread. Take lots of pics, start to "finish" and post as much as you can as you go. We all love to follow, and help if we can, and when you get through it all, you will be glad to have a record of all that you did to get er done.

Yes, I am definitely going to start a project thread, bad things is I only thought of it yesterday after I had already pulled the faux tank and carbs, so I won’t have a real before pic but that’s okay.

Welcome to the club from the UK. When I got my bike I stripped the carbs down myself, first time I'd done that, and they weren't to bad so long as you followed the manual (Haynes). I did however end up sending them to Old Fogey in Scotland, just to make sure, but would be happy to do it myself again. Once you start on this site, you learn so much, about bikes and human kindness, and remember, there are no stupid questions, as I have asked loads over the time I've been here!
