New to Goldwings but not to Honda

#1

Post by raiddrten »

Hey out there. I fell into a deal when a buddy of mine was buying a Triumph and the seller had a Goldwing for sale. It has been sitting for 20 years as his son had it as a project bike. The license plate on the bike is from 1995.

The seller said that the charging system may not work, but the charging connection was hanging by a thread close to the battery. I put some penetrating oil in the spark plug holes, but only one piston seemed to have compression. i followed that with some MMO and now it has 135 to 150 in all the cylinders. Some carb cleaner got it to fire off [sounded like all 4 cyl.] The bike is definitely a keeper .

This seems like the place to be, with randakk as a sponsor and people dedicated to the old ones. Mine is a 1976 GL1000

Thanks for the welcome. I do know about the belts needing changed They look great, but they have to be 20 years old. Same with the tires.

I just came in from the shop. Now the rear tire , shocks and all that is associated with the gas tank removal has happened, due to having a shop manual that came with the bike. The painted parts are very nice, but do suffer a bit from orange peel. No matter, i already did a test run of my favorite clear coat, and it should be possible to flatten it out, add new clear, and flatten some more until i can buff it to suit me--a two footer if not better. The frame paint appears to be original and very nice, with no tell tale ridges or paint lines around the decals

We are missing a few parts, most notable a fuel pump and also the tachometer elbow that is part of the fuel pump assembly. The fuel tank has no rust at all on the outside, with very nice paint as is also present on the frame. The tank inside has crystalline varnish but probably no rust.

I usually go through all the bullet connectors and clean them and also polish all the hard to get at chrome around the headlight ears and gauges. Gotta get that done before the project gets away from me. The bike has a nice painted to match fairing ,so please do not say bad things if I use it.

Carbs were off the bike when i bought it, but i did get the floats loosened from the pins and the pins pulled. A little steam cleaner from Harbor freight helped with that and also with glued on drain screws. Gonna wait on going further on the carbs. If I do them at all it will be with Randakks video.

A friend told me that due to a low center of gravity, the bike will probably behave better than my CB750. It does come off the side stand easier even though it weighs 159 pounds more

I forgot to say that this titled bike only cost me $300.00

Welcome, there’s a lot of us old buggers who love to see pics of progress and builds or restores during the winter months. Hope you’ll do that. I usually glean a tip or two from everyone who shares.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

So I went to FAQ to see how to post pictures, and I discovered that pics on my computer hard drive are not permitted here. I used to do Photobucket and now that is out because it is no longer a free site. I guess i need to ask how to do these things for a computer illiterate person as I do not do facebook or twitter or tweet or whatever other sites put my pictures all over the interscreen

I will do my best to follow the rules as i have no intention of getting in trouble with the Moderators.

The easiest site i ever used is for Wheel Horse tractors. if you pay a membership fee, it is super easy to post pictures

Well, that was easy enough. Now if I could figure out how to edit or add to my posts.....

Anyway, you can see what I am dealing with. The color coat of blue is covered with clear with orange peel. I carefully sand it down with 600 wet and when it flattens down the peaks some, I add clear and sand it again. Eventually, it becomes nearly flat and that is when i buff it out. i always use MeGuiars because it can be painted over without causing fish eye.

oh, and the 600 grit is the coarse paper to get it close. You have to wipe off the water to see how deep you are cutting. then you hit it with 2000 grit and buff it out. They did a nice job on the metal flake, but a poor job on the clear

Here is a little job i did on a tractor hood. i repaired a crease and painted that section red and cleared over the top and then cleared the old 20 year existing paint. All Rustoleum rattle can
