First oldwing, hats off to the site

#1

Post by Boogie Bodine »

Hey folks! Joined primarily to give appreciation for all the helpful resources Ive found here. Got my first ”ol coot scoot” acquired through a friend working the estate of original owner here in Ohio. Free!! (If you can call it that)

76 all original Wing with boxes of parts, manuals, and accessories...even a jigsaw puzzle of the bike haha! Put up and sat for 20+ years...lucky Sucker me... I’ve revived a few dead horses so took the challenge. Always preferred smaller, lighter, more nimble rides both on and off road, but had recently been considering a touring bike so... this one found me. Beautiful bike, but some rotten guts obviously.

Began w the fuel system full of cake. Wish I had seen this site before purchasing the carb rebuild kit, but with some rage and manipulation got it done along w the rest of fuel system. Then ignition timing issues, book was no help. Came across “split the difference” huge improvement! Then after some safety checks, lube, and brake (de-seizing) took her for a first ride. All going great until it lost ignition. Of all the things… Camshaft timing stem broke off!? What!? Must’ve had fracture. Explains all the timing issues. Again, referred to your site for replacement.

Long story short we are back in action. Thanx again! Belts had been replaced sometime before it’s slumber, but... they’re over 20 years so I’m sure you all would recommend “REPLACE DEM BELTS!” Still some other details to work out so more to come. She’s mostly begging to roll down sum miles I think. Every little sprint, she runs a little better!
Anyway just wanted to take time and pay homage to all those who graciously shared and organized all the priceless wisdoms here. Appreciated!

20 year old belts???? I wouldn't even think of starting her again without changing them. Odds are they are dry rotted to the bone. I think the recommended change of belts is 5 years or 5000 miles. Nice bike, hope it stays that way. Good luck

Right! Setting for 20+ years, all seals, hoses, brake lines, rubber, belts, fluids, grease, clutch plates, cables, etc. etc. are suspect for sure. All examined and/or replaced mostly during the “super fun” gas tank and carb removal downtime. Amazingly… I had not found a single sign of dry rot! Even the tires... Speaks well to insulated attached garages I guess. I am generally replacing many of these things to be on the safe side especially given the low investment.
Btw, The bike came with a Honda OEM package with belts and a receipt from 1994. While looking up replacement belts and seeing some for sale in the same package gave me pause...wonder how long THOSE have been sitting around? I’m sure that the 5 years recommend change is pertaining to “of use”. Well, if I’m not putting 24 year old belts on...would I accept anyone’s potential NOS online? K, perhaps I overthought it, but I erred on the side of paranoia and picked up some fresh aftermarket belts at an auto store.
