New member intro
Hello to All,
I’m a new member here, but have been riding motorcycles for over 50 years. I live near Green Bay, WI. Now for a confession: I don’t own a Goldwing. However, a good friend has agreed to sell me his 1978 GL1000, which I’ll be taking ownership of as soon as it comes out of winter storage in a couple of weeks.
I do own an 86 Suzuki Cavalcade 1400-a touring bike full dresser which was built to compete with the Goldwing. I also own a 77 Triumph Bonneville, which I fully restored in 2015, and I still have the first new motorcycle I ever bought-a 1967 Triumph Mountain Cub.
My brother owns an 86 Goldwing and he and I have done a lot of touring together, so I’m kinda familiar with that Wing. I’ve even seen him hauling firewood on it from wood merchant to our campsite. Very versatile bike. We have ridden together all around the Midwest, to Canada and thru upstate New York and even to the top of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.
Most likely, I’ll be doing extensive refurbishing on the 78 Wing soon. It would be great if I have it ready to ride to Deadwood this August. Incidentally, I lived in the Black Hills for 10 years and have done a lot of riding there.

78's in my humble opinion are the sharpest looking wings.
Be sure to post pics of your bikes.. it will make you very popular right off the hop.

I see you’re in Nova Scotia. I’ve often wanted to take a ride up there. Closest I got was in Maine with my brother back in 08. We debate about taking a ferry over there, but we had ridden for 7 days in the rain and figured we’d just get more rain, so scratched Nova Scotia off our list on that trip. I’m jealous, still would like to visit your homelands. Thanks for welcoming me.

August is the best time to visit here..June and July can be dicey as far as rain. If you ever do make it up be sure to ride the south shore and Cabot Trail.Wirelic wrote:Hello 5 Speed

Welcome from Arizona. Speaking of Mt. Washington, some of my fondest riding memories are from the years I lived in New England. New Hampshire backroads around the Lakes are some of the finest motorcycling roads in the country - just watch out for wildlife. New England is where I had my British iron passion, too.

Thanks for the welcome. New Hampshire does have some great riding! And riding to the top of Mt Washington was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had on a cycle. Incidentally, I believe I rode in the heaviest and most prolonged rain ever when touring in New Hampshire for a few days. And I agree with you about the roads there. They are night and day different from the bad roads in Vermont.

Hello for a second time.
Well, gang, I’m finally here again after a very long absence. I finally did get the 78 Wing, but my friend wouldn’t sell it to me- he gifted the bike to me after it sat in my garage for 15 months waiting for him to decide what he was going to do with it.
It needs a fair amount of work. It hasn’t run in 3 years, I know gas tank is rusty and therefore, I’ll be cleaning the carbs. I just ordered Randakk’s carb rebuild kit & video. The brakes are not releasing, I ordered caliper and master cylinder rebuild kits and I’ll be putting S.S. brake lines on it. I ordered Caswell epoxy fuel tank liner. I plan to do the usual like adjust valves, new timing belt, new points, coils, rectifier, fuel lines, tires and so on. And I’ll post photos.
Meanwhile, if any of you have suggestions or recommendations, I’ll be more than happy to hear them.

I left my 78 Triumph sit for 9 years. I didn't even drain the tank. When I decided to put it back on the road the gas tank was very gunked up and rusty. I removed the tank from the bike and removed the fuel shut off valve and put a rubber plug in the hole.I used a solution of 1part muriatic acid to 4parts water and let it set about 4 hours. After pouring out the acid solution (into a box of sand to let it dry out - not down the drain) I rinsed the tank with water with baking soda mixed in it. My gas tank looked like new inside. Make sure you keep it off the paint and use eye protection when working with any type of acid.
