Just inherited my father's '86 1200 interstate

#1

Post by Jescal 81 »

My brother and I just inherited my father's (formerly grandfathers) '86 1200 interstate after his passing last month. We have decided to breathe new life into her and turn her into something my father would have really loved.

She runs good and has been well maintained but we're planning on stripping her down and turning her into a street fighting cafe racer. I'd be ever grateful for info on threads or trouble shooting info from people who have made this transformation, particularly as it relates to gauge/ dummy light relocation or removal, minimalistic hand controls, seat alteration or replacement, bikini fairing, and foot pegs to replace the foot boards.

Thank you so much, happy to be part of the forum.

Welcome to the site. Good that you're going to do a nice tribute to your Dad. Spend some time in the ShopTalk section. There are a lot of threads referenced there that will help you get started.

Welcome from St Louis. You will have quite a challenge because the bodywork on the 1200 is made to work together. The interstate model is easier than the aspy. Ask many questions and you will get answers.

There's something special about working on a bike that's been in the family for three generations! Good luck and welcome. Have fun browsing the site. I'm sure you'll find something to give you inspiration.
Goldwings don't accelerate, they gain inertia.

1978 GL1000 - almost stock - needs a head replaced, parts are ready to install!
1979 GL1000 - Winter project/parts bike - custom "Busted"
1983 GL1100 Standard- raised from the dead and back to organ donor status
And the newest acquisition, 1979 XS 650F to be a sidecar tug. crossy.gif

1985 GL650 Silverwing another mistake, horrible bike
1986 CBX550 Good commuter

Thank you all so much for the warm introduction. It's been a rough couple months with things, but we're about to start tearing down and designing the changes. Looking forward to new fabrications and new memories. I'll check out all your suggestions and post the progress as we go.

Thank you. Yeah we were seeing how the fairings all fit together. Thinking about casting a one off tank fairing out of fiberglass. And doing the same for a custom seat pan.
