First NGW newbie gotta read

#1

Post by Toneron2 »

Hello
Just entered the world of the Naked Gold Wing - picked up this cold blooded 1979 this week. The backrest and front fender appear to be factor accessories or an option package?

Backrest, seat, bags, mirrors and fender trim are all aftermarket I think. Welcome from St Louis. Bike still looks good. How many miles?

Welcome!
I'll go out on a limb and guess that the backrest was transplanted from a 2001+ GL1800.
No clue on the fender, but I like it.

I'd run some heavy doses of Berryman's B12 in the fuel tank, see if it gets less cold-blooded.
Most will say to replace the timing belts if you have no idea of their age.

Thanks everyone - yeah a very cool and useful site you all have.
Just found out from the mechanic who worked on the bike before I bought it that they tried to rebuild the front master cylinder and the kit didn't fit - seems it has a CB750 mc. I have been a car guy until this point and it looked correct - the whole thing looked correct to me except the obvious side "tank" panel color and missing side panels (originally a black bike).

And of course sounds like I need someone to fix the exhaust as opposed to spending +2000.++. I do know someone - back in Michigan. I am surprised you can't buy a full stainless repop. The made a lot of these bikes. Hmmm.... They make whole brand new Mustangs and Camaros.

In addition to the exhaust, B12 and timing belt it needs a rear tire before I'll take it beyond the neighborhood. Front is new I don't know why he didn't do both.

Thanks again for the welcome and tips.

Welcome. The '79 GL1000 MC is indeed very similar to the CB750 MC of that year. Maybe identical. Very different from the other GL1000 MCs. I agree that you should try to find someone to patch the exhaust if you want to keep it stock appearing. The exhausts, rear grab bar, and side panels are made out of unobtainium. '78 and '79 side panels are similar and I believe interchangeable. Why no longer available? They fell off! The attachment was very positive, but people would just not make sure they were latched properly. A lot of GL1000 owners use Harley take-offs (check with dealerships, they often have tons) from Sportsters. HD guys want them loud, and pull the stock mufflers off of brand new bikes before they take them home.
