Hello from the Nature Coast of Florida

#1

Post by ancientdad »

Where it has been the rainy coast for the last couple weeks... but a clear day was had last Sunday, and I attended the informal VJMC gathering at the Coney Island hot dog place in Brooksville where I saw a Wing that turned out to belong to a member here. I've always liked naked bikes, since long before the term naked replaced what I used to refer to them as just stripped down - no turn signals, fairings or body work not necessary for normal operation. On my first Wing, a '75, I even removed the radiator air scoops to make it look a bit more trim but relented and re-installed them later, but painted black to blend in with the frame. At one time prior to trading it for a gorgeous '70 Monte Carlo (a woman was involved... of course), it had a 4.10 gear and a Kerker 4 into 1 on it, and I rode the bike as a sport bike and my only transportation during the entire time of ownership as I am not a cruiser or touring guy. It was bought as a total wreck as my late father was a body and paint expert, and he painted it Corvette yellow with replicated factory stripes (but with black and gold instead of the blue Honda used) to go along with the great bike magazine story about the Yellow Whale that trekked across the country from California to Daytona for bike week that year. During the wreck rebuild, I told my Dad about the magazine article and asked him if he could do a cartoon whale on the sidecovers for me... he could have been a cartoonist in his life as he had immense talent at getting what was in his mind to the hand, and he did a great job that I treasure to this day (and should never have traded away the bike, but youth and stupidity ruled out at that time). I'm also a member at Honda Twins under the same username and built a street-legal replica of my Honda 450 drag bike from the early '70s, documented there. Anyway, just wanted to say hello, to mention that I hope to do another naked Gold Wing in the near future and share a few pics of my previous one (hope I'm doing things correctly, this format is a bit different than HT). Please ignore the date on some of the pics, I converted old 35mm slides using a fluorescent light and camera a few years back... hair style and Honda mechanic uniform of the mid-'70s validates it!

Cool pics!
Good to meet you at Coney Island.
I only took one picture there, and your 450 is almost front and center.

Thanks guys... as most of us, I have a bunch of previous projects, and many of my early bikes from age 14 on were either bought as junk and rebuilt by my Dad and I or later, bought as total wrecks from Cycle Parts of Florida on Linebaugh Ave in Tampa (for those in the area who remember it) during the '80s and rebuilt. I've had 2 CBXs and 2 Wings, the '75 above and a '76 bought later from my Dad after he rebuilt it from wrecked. I hope to find an affordable Wing in need of some work that I can make a project out of in the next year or so, but I'm in no hurry - I'm semi-retired now and finished my 450 in time to take it to Barber for the vintage festival, so mission accomplished there. Took a ton of pics while there if anyone is interested in looking at them. Really enjoyed the VJMC get-together and Wog's Wing - love to see different done to naked Wings! Here are the pics from that day as well https://www.hondatwins.net/forums/11-ri ... e.html#top

Thanks Paul - plan to get one as soon as finances allow, want to revisit another old project idea that has been simmering for a while. Wish I hadn't traded the yellow whale for a car back in the late '70s, but it probably wouldn't have stayed with me this long anyway. Good people, that's nice to hear and what I'm looking for. Plenty of forums out there with less than friendly population. I've been looking around and can't seem to find where I can create a small gallery of pics - do I have to make one elsewhere and link it here? Is that the only way it will work in this format? Still learning my way around
