Bigscheaf: no reprimand. I started as a Private, will retire as a 35-year Colonel, switched over when I was a Sergeant. Yup, the bike will remain fairly unchanged as the Wixom compliments the old Ultra hack well. I’m unsure of the king/queen seat because I have no time sitting on it. If it’s good, I’ll keep it, but if not, I’ll go back to stock or something flatter anyway. I’d like to find an original exhaust, but I think they are made of unobtanium.

5speed, tomk1960, thanks guys

Pidjones, good luck in your restoration.

Well it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir. Your career sounds like one heck of a journey thus far, but I’m sure it’ll be nice to hang your hat soon. I started out as an E2 on active duty and got up to E4P before transitioning to the guard. After finding out the promotion process works a lot differently I decided to see what ROTC was all about, since I was already in college anyway, and decided it was a good fit. And now I just wrapped up my DA board packet for captain.

If your travels ever bring you through Sioux Falls, let me know and I’ll buy you a drink.

I find the K&Q seat shoves me up into the shelter. Much happier on the stock seat. But then, my wife only rides with me on the GL1800. BTW, good luck finding a stock seat in good shape. They are made in the same factory as the original exhaust system and chrome grab bars.

good OEM exhausts are very hard to find, but they come up occasionally. Having had a big hack on my 78 the one downside is there are times you will really notice the lack of power. by 78-79 the GL1000's were tuned more to be highway bikes not power bikes. If you have not had a hack before I usually set the toe-in at 0 to 1/2".

Once again, if you are new to hacks, remember in the beginning ALL of your motorcycle instincts are wrong!

Bisscheaf: I'm sure I'll be your way. We'll hoist a libation together if/when I do.
pidjones: Thanks, I'm learning a lot as I go along here.
rcmatt007: Thanks for the advice. I do have a URAL which I'm restoring; have not ridden it yet. I'll make sure to take my time learning that hacks are different.

I appreciate all the help and knowledge that this board provides.

Not a lover of sidecars normally, but that one is very stylish. Great looking outfit all together.

That is a sweet looking ride... it looks like it's had some interesting modifications, too, like a 4-2-1 exhaust out the left side, and maybe a different coil pack mounted on the left side, as well? Nicely done!

Track T 2411, Thanks, I fell in love with it at first sight and made a quick deal when I bought it. I'm still learning, but yes--a 4:2:1 exhaust (not sure of make, but I'll take it for ceramic coating if it's solid. And the upgraded coil pack is of unknown make as well. I'll learn and take good care of her.

just my .02,
if ya don't mind going back to stock headers, the Harley FLH (and pretty sure the FLT) take-offs (usually fairly cheap on eBay or a local HD shop) slip on & fit almost exactly as if made for the GL. and they sound really nice. and since you won't be leaning you won't scrub the chrome off of 'em (I learned that the hard way).

and welcome from NW WA state.

btw, LOVE that color!
