NGW Newbie Here

#1

Post by Dr. Frankenstein »

Hi everybody! I just picked up a 1977 GL1000 with low mileage and a pretty promising candidate for renewal/restoration, and it seems like this is the place to be to get her back on the road - here she is fresh off the truck:

I plan to ditch the fairings - a Vetter Windjammer SS w/ a trunk and almost-two side hardbags(one doesn't have a lid), and I even found a 70's helmet in the trunk! - but may keep them, just not on the bike; I haven't decided yet.

I'll be combing through the veritable mountain of info here - but whattya think? And Yes, I already have the new belts on the way. I've worked on bikes before - Yamaha Viragos, Kawasaki KZ650B, Honda Dreams, even a Puch 250 - but the GL1000 is a first for me - my 'Everest', if you will -

It was reportedly found in an auctioned storage unit with 26K on the clock:

All it *seems* to need is a set of turn signals, a key, and a tool tray inside the faux tank - for $600 I don't think I went too far wrong.

No, I haven't tried to start it - the whole 'interference engine' thing - makes me a little nervous - so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Welcome from Wisconsin. Looks like a good solid bike! The first order of business should be to change the timing belts. There are some great threads in ShopTalk, including the 'new 2 you' thread linked in my signature. If you need more specific info or help, post it in the tech forum, and be sure to start a build thread in either of the build forums. And post lots of pics! We love pics, lol!
Enjoy the ride!

Download a Honda shop manual and you are on your way! You may not care for the K&Q seat (I found it very uncomfortable). Originals are hard to find, but there are lots of alternatives.

I usually go to these, because I can cross-reference different years.
