Recent owner of a '75 GL1000 with an 1100 engine

#1

Post by PlaywrightDonnie »

Hey, NGW members!

I just discovered this forum while doing some research for my '75 GL1000 that I purchased as a non-running WIP a last summer. I've done some work on her, rebuilt the carbs, added missing fuel line and replaced the starter, fuel pump and filter, selonoid, ignition coils and wires, ignition, plugs, etc. My challenge has been that this bike has a 1100 engine. Assuming a previous owner swapped this out at some point? I have no history on her, as I purchase for $600 off CL as a non-running no title, no record of anything project bike.

If anyone has any comments on a '75 with an '80 1100 engine, please feel free to post!

Cheers!

You’ll like it. It will be quicker than 75 unless the PO also put an 1100 final drive on it too.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Welcome from Wisconsin. It sounds like you've already dug into it pretty good! The biggest differences between the 1100's and 1000's are the carbs, cams, and ignition system. It's difficult to say what's been done with no clear record, but there are a few things to look for. Obviously, you've done the carbs, so you should know if they're 1000's or 1100's. The cams could be either, but the easiest way to tell would be if the bike is using the 1000's ignition system, which is either points or an aftermarket electronic system that runs off the left cam. The 1100's have a factory electronic ignition that runs off the back of the engine, and separate 'spark units' that would have been wired into the wiring harness. The 1100's left side cam has no provision for using the 1000's ignition system.
All that said, if you've got 1000 carbs and cams in the 1100 engine, mated with the 1000's final drive, as Eric says above, it should be a hot ride!

welcome to ngw…. did I miss it in the list? But be sure to change the timing belts. Where about's are you, as getting a title on an untitled bike can be a challenge to non-starter in a lot of states, but doable in others.

Welcome!

As an owner of a '78 with an '83 engine, I too would be interested to know if you have the pulse generator on the rear of the engine or if you're running the '75 ignition (or similar)? The PO of my bike thought the best way to make room for the pulse generator was to just remove that section of the frame... not a good way to go.

As Rodger stated you might really want to investigate if you will be able to obtain a title (if you haven't already) before you dump too much time and money into your bike. Here in Oregon it would be almost impossible to register a bike that didn't have the title - found that out the hard way on another bike purchase. Luckily that one didn't cost me too much!
